USB Storage Device issue

I have been given a USB device with my wedding photos on. I'm new to Mac having just purchased a Macbook Pro with latest version of Mountain Lion. When I plug the USB device in, nothing pops up and I can't find the drive or the photos contained anywhere. I'm getting a bit frustrated. Would anyone please point me in the right direction. Thank you in advance

My MacBook is:

15-inch: 2.3 GHz

2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz, 4GB 1600MHz memory

Running:

OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Have the person who provided you with the USB device to fix it so it is properly formatted for use on a Mac.

In the Finder. go to the menu File > New Finder Window

In the window that opens, do you see the USB device there?

Nope, but I am reassured that's where I thought I'd find it! Have tried the USB on a PC and works there, but trying to phase that out and use Mac

Check that "External disks" is checked in at least one of the following locations:

Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the desktop

Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > Show these items in the sidebar

You can pick either or both, depending on what you prefer. Apple chose "neither" for you.

If you launch Disk Utility, is the USB device shown on the left side in the list of devices and volumes?

If it shows up, select the device and let us know what is shown for Partition Map Scheme, then select the volume (indented below the device name) and let us know what is shown for Format.

If Disk Utility cannot see it at all, time to go back to the photographer.
