Classic G6 won't restore - no error message

I've had fault free performance from my 6th gen 160GB classic for 2-3 years until last night - sync hanged for an age. After some mucking about I successfully restored and refilled. I should've left it there but decided to delete a couple of podcasts and sync again. Big mistake. More sync hanging and itunes ultimately unable to read ipod. I've not had any error codes come up.

I've tried to restore again today, but the following happens each time I try:

1) My ipod (with name) is found by finder - after 2-3 minutes delay

2) Itunes takes about 15-20 minutes to find the ipod (with SWOD for at least half that period)

3) Ipod disappears from finder, I get the 'improper ejection' wrist-slap from the Mac and itunes tells me it can't restore the ipod because it can't find it.

Disk diagnostics do not look good:

Retracts: 3

Reallocs: 48

Pending Sectors: 160

PowerOn hours: 25 (can't be right - I use it lots)

Start/stops: 5745

Temp current: 23

Temp min: 8

Temp max: 56

I assume the Super Fix is the next step, unless it's a lost cause with so many disk errors?

Thanks,

Nick

Hi, thanks for the reply. Finally got round to trying this but to no avail. When trying to erase using disk util, I get the following error:

Volume Erase failed with the error:

POSIX reports: The operation couldn’t be completed. Operation not permitted

This is when trying to erase the partition ("my iPod") rather than the disk itself ("159.84 GB Apple iPod Media"). Should I be trying to erase the latter, rather than the former? The super fix text isn't clear.

TIA,

Nick

Thanks again - I've had limited success with this.

Erasing the iPod disk (which, for any other luddites who worry like me, does not delete the OS - just the music data) meant that iTunes could finally find the iPod and restore it. It started syncing and all appeared well...

...until, that is, the sync finishes and you hit disconnect. The iPod ejects from iTunes, and shows the 'OK to disconnect' screen with the usual white progress bar.

When the disconnect progress bar is full, the iPod resets itself, and afterwards has no accessible content on it (0KB free under 'settings'). Which is odd, as when you reconnect it iTunes it syncs OK, as if nothing were wrong (the capacity and disk usage is shown correctly).

I've tried restoring again since and the pattern happens routinely. It doesn't matter if it's left plugged in during the 'ok to disconnect' screen or unplugged - it resets itself all the same.

I suspect this is heading towards 'terminal' status but am all ears if there are any other potential solutions!
