iMac does not recognize Canon MP560

Hi,

I downloaded all the latest drivers and software packages for Canon MP560 from the Canon USA website. I then tried to connect my iMac (running OSX 10.8.2) to the printer. First, I add the printer to the "Print & Scan" option in System Preferences:

User uploaded file

Then, I open up MP Navigator EX. I click on the Scan/Import button on that popup window, which pops open another window. I click the Open Scanner Driver button on that window:

User uploaded file

Another window pops up and I click on the Scanner Selection button:

User uploaded file

unfortunately, there is no scanner to be selected on the next pop-up window:

User uploaded file

I assume that my iMac is not recognizing the printer/scanner, even though they are both on the same wireless network.

I double-check - the printer is indeed connecting to the NetGear70 wireless network as is my iMac.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can solve this problem?

Thanks so much!

Remember that Canon IJ Scanner icon you removed from your Menu Bar? That might be the problem you're having now. You might want to put that back into your Logon Items and restart then click on that icon in the Menu Bar then Scanner Settings and choose your Canon MP560 radio button NOT the Do Not Use.

I'm not on my Mac but I think that Canon IJ Scanner utility is in your user Library folder. ~/Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter/Utilities/Canon IJ Network Scan Utility or it might be in the system /Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter/Utilities/Canon IJ Network Scan Utility.

EDIT: or just reinstall the scanner driver .dmg which should put that icon back in our Menu Bar and Logon Items.

On the Canon website they show that the Canon MP 560 does NOT have any available Utility software that is compatible with Mountain Lion; only the Printer and Scanner Drivers are compatible. So it would seem that you Cannot continue using the "MP Navigator EX". Instead, after installing the Mountain Lion compatible Printer and Scanner Drivers, you should use Apple's Print & Scan software to run your scanning:

Your Model apparently needs to use Apple's "Print & Scan" which is found in Applications>System Preferences>"Print & Scan". There you will follow the following instructions from the HP Support site to Scan, for instance:

  1. Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the automatic document feeder (ADF) if your printer has one.
  2. Click the Apple menu (User uploaded file# ), and then click System Preferences .
  3. Click Print & Scan (User uploaded file# ).
  4. Click your printer in the left pane.
  5. Click Scan , and then click Open Scanner .
  6. Click Show Details . The details of the scan display, including options to change scan settings.Figure 4: Example of the Show Details scanning screenUser uploaded file#
  7. Change any scan settings as necessary, and then click Scan .User uploaded fileNOTE: Make sure to select either the Flatbed mode or the Document Feedermode, depending on your printer and how you plan to scan.

Hope this helps 🙂

Hi,

When I clicked the "Scanner Selection" option which takes me to the "Scanner-from-PC Settings" pop-up window, the icon for the Cannon Scanner reappears on the top TaskBar:

User uploaded file

but the "Scanner-from-PC Settings" still shows no printer/scanner to select

Regarding your suggestion on Canon IJ Scanner utility, I found the Cannon Utilities fold here:

User uploaded file

but was not able to find IJ Scanner utility.

I went back and re-installed all the drivers files. I even re-started the computer, but the result is still the same - my iMac does not recognize the Canon MP560. Do you have suggestions?

Thanks!

Remove your entry in the Print & Scan system preference for the Canon scanner.

There are 2 driver files for the MP560 at Canon's web site. One is the CUPS printer driver and the other is the Scanner driver. You need to install BOTH before you can use the scanner. So, install the printer driver first then the scanner driver. Then ADD the Canon printer to Print & Scan. Don't try to add a scanner entry. It's not necessary. You will set the scanner up via the Canon IJ Network Scanner icon in the Menu Bar.

Adding the printer:

Once the printer and scanner drivers are installed and the printer has been added, the Menu Bar will contain the scanner icon. Click on that icon and choose Open Settings, you should see the image below and you want to choose the Canon MP560 entry. Click OK.

Hi,

I installed both files twice before, but to follow your instruction, I installed all 3 files in the "Drivers" directory on the Canon USA website once again:

I then re-started my iMac and then tried to add the printer, but the only that came up is the scanner:

Even if I tried to add the scaner, my iMac still does not recognize the scanner:

Do you have any more suggestions for me (before I pull all my hair out :-)). Thanks so much!

And yes, I did find the Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector2 file where you said it is.

You have to wait when you open Print & Scan before your printer will show in the list. Just be patient then you should see your WiFi printer similar to the image I provided. All you will see at first are the Bonjour entries like your image shows. But you have to wait to see the Canon IJ Network in the Kind column. Wait at least 5 minutes. It should show up before that time is up!

The only other advise I can give is to delete the Canon folder in /Library/Printers as well as any entries in your user Library/Printers (~/Library/Printers) and start over. Also make sure your printer is being seen on your LAN. You may have to enter the printer settings on the printer itself and set the LAN settings manually. You might also shutdown your printer, Mac, router and cable/DSL modem, wait a minute or two and bring it all back up starting with your modem, router, printer and Mac.

You ONLY need to install the CUPS printer and scanner dmg files from Canon. Don't install the misd-mac_1_11 dmg file it's not needed. If this doesn't work, I really don't know what else to tell you. I only have the one printer (Canon MP560) and both the printer and scanner are working great.

Hi,

I have now removed all Canon printer-related directories twice and re-installed all the software from the Canon USA website twice. At the end, my iMac only shows the Canon scanner. And when I selected the Canon scanner, it won't connect. I had this problem once before when Apple updated their software and Canon was slow to update theirs. May be this time it's the same problem. In any case, it has been a long day so I am going to call it quit for now. Thanks for all your help!

I know this thread hasn't been active since October, but I am trying to get this figured out too. I DO successfully see both the Scanner and Printer listed after following your instructions. I had the printer working, previously but didn't realize there was a separate driver for the scanner at the time I got my MBP. I removed it from the list, downloaded both drivers, and added both the scanner and the printer). (I didn't do anything in "Library" not sure how?) From Print/Scan, I can indeed open the scanner now. BUT what I need to scan is multiple page PDFs, and can't figure out how to do so? I loaded my first page, went into show details, chose my save to folder, chose pdf, put a check mark in combine into single document. When I press scan it scans only one receipt on the page... (after it had done an initial scan of whole page w/o being prompted it upon opening). There are no save, scan next page etc choices. Can I accomplish a multipage pdf doc from Print/Scan?? I then tried installing the Navigator software I used from my old Windows pc (I downloaded the Mac version for Moutain Lion of course). It opened, I tried to scan from there, but it says the scanner is not connected?? Obviously it IS there (wirelessly), I was just accessing it!!! How do I get Navigator to recognize the scanner now? Thank you so much for any assistance you can offer!!
