Bandwidth

do you use double bandwidth ? In other words if your streaming a video (1 gig) will you use this one time for your mac and 1 time for the stream (from mac to the apple TV) ? If so does this also apply if your using a hard line eg Ethernet ? I know that with the playstaion if you are streaming you get charged double bandwidth. I am curious I am currently looking into upgrading some desktops and laptops.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

If you are mirroring local content then no internet bandwidth is used. If you are mirroring online content you would not be using double bandwidth.

I am running into useage issues as well. My ISP provider advises that we use bandwidth when downloading the movies/TV shows and also use bandwidth when watching these using the Apple TV - they tell me this is because it is being done over an internet connection. Is this true? If it is, it is not worth it for us to use the Apple TV. We are very restricted in our useage (largest package is limited to 85 GB for $110 per month).

That is correct. There is no downloading or storage for the Apple TV 2nd and 3rd gen, it is all being streamed. Bandwidth is used when you rent and also when viewing purchased material as it is coming via the cloud.

The only time you are not using bandwidth is when using home-sharing or airplay with local content (stored on computer or IOS device). So if you are restricted then rent or purchase on one of those devices if you intend to store or view more than once. An HD film, for example, is usually 4-5GB so it can add up.

Thank you for the response.

But we are watching things that have already been downloaded to the computer. So they are on the computer already and have been converted to an iTunes friendly format. Home-sharing has been turned on and when accessing from Apply TV - we select the computer not the internet or iCloud.

Looking for help to minimize the bandwith but still allow us to view the downloaded shows.
