iPod Touch 5G Wi-Fi Defect?

I bought today a brand new Silver iPod Touch 5th generation, and I'm having BIG issues maintaining a Wi-Fi connection:

My iPod recognized and connected to my Wi-Fi network, so I went to Safari and tried opening various websites and it worked at the beginning, but things got fishy when I closed the application and opened it again; the Internet was not working anymore (the App Store, iTunes Store, Mail, or anything that required an internet connection stopped working as well). I turned off my Wi-Fi on my iPod Touch and turned it on again, opened Safari and it worked until I closed the application and opened it again.

I tried the following to attempt to solve the problem: resetting the network settings, resetting all settings, resetting my router, restoring the iPod Touch to factory settings, but after each try, none of these things solved my problem, and it still did the same thing. As a last test, I went to my university to try out the Wi-Fi there to see if the problem was with my router but it did the same thing, it stopped working after some browsing....so I'm wondering, what could be happening to the iPod Touch? Is it defective or is there another way to solve this? Thanks...

Yea, the router is not the troubling factor, it's something to do with the iPod Touch itself. Listen to this, I realized by trial and error that if the Wi-Fi connection doesn't require a password, the Wi-Fi on my iPod works perfectly; however, when I have to input a password to grant me access to a network, that's when the problem arises. So ColeShep, I think you are having the same problem, because your iPod didn't have issues browsing the Internet on Wi-Fi networks that don't require password such as Apple's or McDonald's, but when you go home things get messed up, because I'm assuming your Wi-Fi requires a password. Do me a favor if you can, remove the password on your Wi-Fi for a few minutes and try to connect again to see if the problem gets fixed. As for me, I returned the iPod Touch the next day I bought it, and will buy one again when I'm certain this problem has been addressed and solved.

Here is the problem that I was having with my iPod Touch 5th Generation in more depth so people can undestand better and maybe even relate to this:

- After setting up the Wi-Fi network at home with my iPod Touch for the first time, I realized that it wasn't working at all, so I just turned off the Wi-Fi, waited a few seconds and turned it back on. Then I opened Safari and it worked when I loaded the first website.

- Then I opened a new page and loaded a second website successfully, so I closed this page and went back to the first one where I had opened my FIRST website. I tried loading a third website, only this time it never loaded.

- I closed Safari and opened the App Store to check if the problem was only with Safari but no, the App Store wasn't working either, nor was anything that required an Internet connection.

- I went to settings and turned off the Wi-Fi, waited a few seconds again, turned it on, opened Safari and after loading a few websites the same thing happened again.

- So the only way I could solve this was by turning my Wi-Fi off and on EVERY SINGLE TIME the connection was lost.

- Then I decided that maybe it was my router that had some kind of problem, and went to my university, which has two kinds of Wi-Fi connections: One that requires a password and one that doesn't. I first connected to the one WITHOUT requiring a password, and to my surprise, the Wi-Fi on my iPod Touch WORKED PERFECTLY; I could open any application that required an Internet connection without an issue and could load any website that I wanted, and I browsed Safari for at least 15 minutes to make sure it was really working.

- So then I switched to the Wi-Fi network that REQUIRED a password, and it didn't work, just like my Wi-Fi network at home, which also requires a password.....I'm almost certain that this is where the problem is.

My touch 5G keeps forgetting my home network (Linksys WRT 120N router). It always remembers my office network, and those of friends. No problem connecting to any public WiFi. Home network is something else.

Once I key in the password, the touch connects immediately. But once it gets out of range, it just will not automatically connect when it comes back into my home network range and I have to go through the password process again.

I've tried the "forget this network" tactic, as well as a hard reset. No difference.

My iPad 2 (purposely kept on iOS 5.1.1) works flawlessly on my home network and everywhere else, so am guessing something in iOS 6 might need a tweak

I'm pretty sure I have found a fix to the iPod touch 5g wifi problems. Thanks to TIGERTIGRE. The iPod touch seems to have trouble connecting with networks that require a password. My recommendation is for you to go to your router settings and enable a guest network. Or a type of secondary network. And make sure there is no password and disable SSID Brodcast, so the name isn't displayed on discoverable devices for enhanced security. When you have applied the changes go to the iPod and click other in the wifi settings. Enter the network name select none as the password and your off. This should act as a public network but a very secure one, almost as if you had a password. I have found this to be a fix to the iPod touch wifi connectivity issues and I'm glad TIGERTIGRE could be the base of the idea.

Thanks for the info, but my touch 5G automatically connects to my office WiFi - which is password protected, as well as friends' networks - also password protected. It remembers those passwords but not my home network password. Once connected to my home network, it's fine and stays connected until I leave the house and get out of range. When I return, I have give it the password again because it won't automatically connect. At least I've saved the password in Notes and now just copy and paste it, since its a 10-digit combination of letters and numbers. Saves time.

I did read of a possible solution on the MacRumors forum, and that was to use "other" when choosing a network, then using the same name as the existing network and the same IP address/DHCP and password. That worked for a number of people, so I'll give it a try. For me personally, running an unsecured network is not something I want to do.

BTW, there is no "forget this network" instruction on iOS 6. Was thinking of my iPad when I wrote that in my original comment. When I looked for it on my touch, that option was missing for whatever reason.

Solved! I chose "other" in my WiFi settings, used my network name, entered passwrd, and renewed lease. Bingo! Connected instantly yesterday and automatically connected when I got home from work today. Something my touch 5 had not done since I took delivery 10/12.

And I was wrong in stating there is no "forget this network." The instruction is there.
