How what ? There are instructions on creating a new iTunes account without giving a credt card number on the page that this thread was originally posted from : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534

e.g. if you are currently signed into an account then sign out of it, find a free app in the store and click on its free price button :

And then click on 'create Apple id' on the popup that you get :

When I last tried it about a week ago I then got the 'none' option on the payment method screen

Apparently Apple changed iTunes and my previous method does not work anymore 😟

So here is a currently working method as of iTunes 11.0.4.4.

1. Open iTunes

2. Click "iTunes Store" at the upper-right side.

3. Click on "App Store" at the middle-top.

4. Scroll down and find "Top Free Apps" on the right side.

5. Click on the name of any free app (DO NOT CLICK THE FREE BUTTON).

6. Click the "Free" button on the left side under the app icon.

7. Enter your stuck Apple ID and password and click "Get".

8. When you see the "This Apple ID has not been used with the iTunes Store" popup click "Review".

9. Click "Continue".

10. Check the box for "I have read and agree to these terms and conditions" and click "Agree".

11. Click the "None" option under Payment Type. (If there is no "None" option, go back to step #5 and make sure you clicked the Name of the app, not the Free button yet).

12. Make sure the other required fields are filled out (Title, Name, Address, Phone Number)

13. Click "Continue".

14. Enjoy your unstuck Apple ID.

If you don't want to give credit card details then you need to 'buy' a free app as part of the account creation process : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2589 - if you don't use those instructions to create the account then card details will need to be entered on it before you can use the account in the store.

Not sure what you mean by 'type of free app', it just needs to be free to download. There are lots of free apps from lots of developers in the store. It is necessary if you don't want to give credit card details on your account before you can use the account. No idea about iTunes Radio, that is only available in the US, I'm in the UK.

I spoke with Apple Tech Support and they guided me through this. I was trying to get the App Store working on a new iPad mini using a new, but existing Apple ID. To get it to work, I had to go onto iTunes on my main computer (not on the iPad). I had been trying to use the Sign In button, and I was having the issue of being "forced" to enter a credit card, which I did not want to do. Here was the solution I was given, which worked for me.

  1. Log out of iTunes, if you are not already. (Or hit Cancel if you're on the Review Payment screen.)
  2. Instead of going into Sign In, go to Redeem under the Quick Links, on the right-hand side, down a bit.
  3. Go through the screens, accepting the EULA, etc. You will get to a Review Payment screen, similar to the one you saw before, but it will have a None button.
  4. You can enter an iTunes card here if you want, but I was able to leave that field blank and still successfully get the account set up, ready to use on the iPad.

What worked for me (by coincidence) was to use a voucher code.

I clicked the "clickandbuy" option but then instead of clicking to continue, I clicked "Click here to redeem a voucher" or whatever it said. I filled in a code (which was actually one that I had already redeemed on my other account) and while it did tell me at the end that the code had been redeemed, before that it did at the "nothing" option to pay options.

Of course first you need to get ahold of a voucher code... (unless it also works when you enter a non-valid code)

These instructions DO NOT WORK. The instructions state you have an option to select None as your payment type. THIS IS NOT THE CASE.

And once it fails you are stuck halfway through the process. Everytime you try to download a free app it asks you to verify your information, and insists you must supply CC information. The instructions state download a free app, which insists you verify and supply a CC. And around and round we go.

My God Apple, could you possibly make this any more difficult.

Yes, as I have found on another post if you have an existing Apple Id you are completely and totally screwed.

Which is ironic as this is a new account created TODAY. I made the mistake of creating the account then trying to download the "free" app. Now I'm screwed.

My only solution seems to be create a dummy email somewhere and use that to create yet another Apple Id. Which I will promptly forget the password to.

A better solution would be for Apple to fix a seriously flawed process.

I can confirm this just worked for me. I used another iTunes account to gift myself a 99¢ app, then used the new Apple ID to redeem it. "None" was provided as an payment method option during account creation, and afterward I was able to download a free app.

When downloading it prompted me to set up additional security questions, but I was able to tap "Not Now" and continue without doing so.

You MUST NOT create your account prior to going into the App Store and attempting to purchase a free app.THIS IS KEY and easy to overlook the first time you read the instructions.

Once you attempt to purchase the app and are prompted to sign in/create an account THEN AND ONLY THEN do you create an account. Then (apparantly) you will have the option to select NONE.

If you did not follow these steps EXACTLY then you now have NO WAY TO DO THIS with your now existing account.

In my case I created my account then immediately tried to purchase a free app as per the instructions. This did not work obviously. You have to attempt to purchase BEFORE creating your account. Talk about counter intuitive.

Your only recourse now is to "purchase" a free app with a credit card (it *must* be a FREE app). Then manage your account from within iTunes and delete the card from your account.

I said it before. I'll say it again: this is a flawed process.
