IOS 6 - Listening to Videos with the screen off or in the background??

Is there any way to play a video or a music video on iphone 5 so that the audio plays in the background but you can multitask and do other things on the phone while listening? This is critical to how I use the phone. I was able to do this with IOS 5 but functionality was removed on IOS 6.

Please reply if you have found any work-arounds or know if Apple has plans to include this in the next update. It's very silly that I can't even listen to a music video or video while I'm walking about (turns off the second the screen shuts off or the phone is locked).

Have the video playing, lock the screen then double tap home button when the screen is locked you can then choose play while the screen is locked. 🙂

I don't have any videos in my Video app so I can't test it. Did you try the tips I presented for the Video app? I was only using YouTube as an example and now I'm curious if the features work for the Video app.

I checked out the videos app a couple years ago and actually deleted it due to this issue. Now I've signed up for a program where I NEED to learn material which for me means listening to the audio for extended periods, whether or not I can see the video. I could convert the video to audio, but whatever. My phone is getting old; maybe the replacement doesn't need to be an iPhone. I'm sick of giving people a bunch of money and then putting in more work than folks who simply don't seem to care. Contrast that with "it just works". Yeah, right.

If the audio is in your music App then you will be able to do this, but if its a video on the internet on YouTube for example then you cant

Lets use YouTube for example.

Start the video you want to listen to in Safari and start playing it. Exit safari (note the music will stop). double click the home button to multitask and swipe left to bring up the music player controls and press play

Start the video you want to listen to in Safari and start playing it. Lock the screen (note the music will stop). Double click the home button to bring up the music players controls and press play.

These features automatically play from the last audio source (e.g. Safari, Pandora, Music Player). Please note that in my example of YouTube once the video ends you will need to start it in Safari again for this feature to work.

Ah, thanks that's helpful but doesn't solve my issue. I need to be able to play from the "videos" app while walking about (i.e. with my iphone in my pocket listening to it), and ideally also while doing other things on the phone - checking emails, sending texts, etc.

This didn't work for me. I was doing exactly this before on IOS 5 and it worked. Since upgrading to 6 it no longer plays (video and audio just stop). Are you using IOS 6?

This didnt' work for me. What are you pressing. - play on video --> then turning off screen (top right button) --> double clicking home button and hitting play? It just doesn't play anything and shows me the play button again.

Okay well then this could indicate there is something wrong with the software of the device, try backing up to itunes or icloud and restore the device again to reset the software.
