How do I play an audio book on my first generation shuffle?

I downloaded an audio book from the ituens store. It appears in the play list and under books in my library, but I cannot hear it on my shuffle nor on my computer.

Did you drag the audiobook tracks to your iPod Shuffle under Devices in the left hand pane of iTunes?

Yes. What I discovered from reading other discussions is I downloaded an epub rather than a m4b. Is there a a way to play the epub or convert it to an m4b? Or do I have to go back to Apple and reorder? I have no other Apple products.
