I'm stunned! I bought the iPad 1 when it first came out and decided to upgrade to the iPad 3 the day it came out - old eyes and cataract surgery made the retinal display very attractive. Having bought my first computer and Apple product in 1990, I'm very much used to ones "latest and greatest" being not that in a year, but 6 months? And no longer even being sold? An "orphan"? This is a first and I'm none too happy. NO ONE saw this coming! I do feel burned...

Obviously, it's still a great product. I do worry about its re-sale value as it had such a short life and is now not even sold, even though the iPad 2 is. No, I do NOT have to always have the "latest and greatest", but Apple has had a history of a new iPhone and iPad once a year and this tome it's 6 months. That's kind of a game-changer. I think many of the millions who bought yhe iPad 3 will feel the same way - sort of the way those who bought the first iPhone did when the price was dropped so quickly.

However, the release of the Lightning connector-based Camera Connection Kit is of interest for my iPhone 5.

Oops, just checked the Apple Store. The old camera connection kit is $29; the new equivalent for the new iPads & iPhone 5 is $98! I'll just buy the Lightning to 30-pin adapter for $29 and use the kit I already have.

Howdy,

There is nothing to get excited about, or feeling let down over - the third generation iPad is the same as the newest, except for the lightning connector, and a little faster processor.

I have a 3rd generation, a 2nd, and an original - all work fine, and do the job. People that whine and cry about having the latest and greatest crack me up. As long as the device works for whatever you are doing, don't get uptight. When you can afford the newest, then you can sell the old, if you like.

Personally, I have every version of the iPhones, the iPods, iPads, etc, that I have bought, still, as I use them for various tasks, and to ave handy. I don't want, or need to get rid of them, but to each their own.

I will have the new mini iPad, too, as it will be far more portable for me, and we ordered 35 for the medical clinic, for the same reason.

Cheers,

M.

I'm shocked that the iPad 3 is no longer even being sold by Apple. In my 22 years buying Apple products, I don't remember any product being dropped in just 6 months. I am concerned about re-sale value. I typically keep my iPhone for 2 models - actually kept the iPhone 3GS till the iPhone 5 came out. Kept my iPad 1 til iPad 3. My iMac was purchased 3 years ago - will get a new one within the next year.

I have been a staunch supporter of Appke's decision to not make iOS 6 available on the I Pad 1 - first generation and huge changes between it and even the iPad 2. I'm not a winner who constantly yells "It's not FAIR".

My concern is what not even being sold after 6 months will mean to upgrades down the road. I think Apple needs to address this to all those customers who made the iPad 3 the best selling ever.

RIP, iPad 3
