Q: Final Cut not Recognizing Card

I have a late 2011 15-Inch Macbook Pro that has the Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)

I bought this computer about 5 months ago and immediately installed Final Cut Pro X version 10.0.4

Among several cameras I do videos with, I have a Sony HDR-CX190

For the last 5 months I have made hundreds of videos using several cameras having no problems. Final cut imports media easily from my Canon T2i and my iPhone4s. FOr the past 5 months, I would put my Sony camera's chip (a PNY 32GB 20MB/s) directly into the side of my computer. When I would either right click an event and import files, or click on the camera import button, it would bring up all of the videos on the chip. I would select which videos I wanted and import them accordingly. Importing was quick and easy.

2 weeks ago this randomly stopped working. Here are some trouble shooting measures I have taken and the information I know.

The videos are on the chip; the chip is not broken. I can watch the videos on the flip screen on the actual camera, and my friends with windows have imported the files.

My card reader works because I still import media from my canon's memory card. The FINDER also recognizes the card, but has the videos stored as MPEG files and can only open them with VLC.

I have also tried the USB import by plugging a USB chord into my camera while chip is in it for another attempt at importing.

FCP will not recognize the camera, the card, or any of the videos on it.

How do I get my system back to the user-friendly plug-and-play it has been for the last 5 months?????

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5), Sony HD Handicam Final Cut Pro X

When something has been working and then stops, one of the first things I look at doing is deleting the application preferences and taking the system back to scratch.

    Aperture 3 Trouble shooting basics,

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805

    details how to do this.

Also the application I linked to for you does this automates this process.

How do you step back in time, that would be using "Time Machine" that backs your system and data up to an external drive. This page provides you with details on Time Machine

i didn't have machine back up because my files because they are backed up on an external hard drive to begin with, so i never did time machine. there was a software update that i did recently that now says my old projects are under an old file and every time i try to open final cut it gives me the pinwheel and has a box appear that says "updating "blah blah blah" event"

this box will stay there for a long time, it hasn't yet gone away. i have done a force quit, a restart, and it still won't get past the update box.

Now its not even about getting files in, my final cut won't be open without being non responsive
