iTunes won't add songs to my iPod touch

I updated my iTunes version 10 to 10.7 and then I opened it up and connected my iPod. I tried to add songs to my iPod but it wouldn't let that happened. A little popup came up saying

iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "Larissa's iPod". Go to the Summary tab in the iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings.

I don't want to restore my iPod, so how do I make it go back to the old iTunes version 10? Or any other solution?

iPod touch (4th generation), iOS 5.1.1

Disconnect your iPod from your computer. Close iTunes and re-open. Connect the iPod cable to a different usb port, re-connect and fingers crossed the error will go away (happened to me on Sunday and doing the above resolved).
