Is there any chance of upgrading from the early 3rd gen to the new iPad with the A6 chip, when the 3rd gen goes in for a screen repair? Even if it means paying an upgrade charge, if that's even possible. I have also purchased the extended AppleCare with the Early 3rd gen.

Unless it's discontinued / out of stock. I got a late 2010 macbook as replacement for the older model as they couldn't fix the 3 defunct keys after a wine-spill.
I can just about guarantee that Apple will have service replacements of the 3rd-gen iPad for quite some time to come.
That's my guess too, as the stores must have lots in stock. Makes me wonder whether they will drop the price on the 3? (Well the 4 is already more expensive in europe, but it's the same price in the US, no?)
The AppleCare+ replacements are refurbished iPads. Apple does not repair iPads. The iPad they return to you will likely not be the one that you gave them.
The 3rd-gen iPad has been discontinued. Some dealers with remaining stock may drop the price to clear it out, but there will be no price drop from Apple; they've just stopped selling that model.
Yes, i was thinking about dealers mostly like PC World, Currys & the like. My first macbook was on an in-store sale at PCworld at the time, so i think there might be similar deals on the 3 perhaps?
If a dealer still has stock, I think they'd be insane not to drop the price on the older model, but that's up to the dealer. Folks will just have to shop around.
