My son has been bought an ipod touch for his birthday. He is 10 so I obviously have concerns about the fact that he can browse safari and you tube from his device .In settings, general, restrictions I can turn these programs on or off only. However for apps I can limit to 4+. I can filter films to u or pg. Why is there no such filtering system for the browsers? Or have I missed something?

I did look at Mobicop but past version reviews were quite negative - perhaps the latest version is improved.(?)
I will also look into changing my home router settings which could filter information when using home wi fi at least.
There are other browsers like Safe Browser and Mucduff (or similar spelling)

I have just seen that despite me restricting apps to 4+ he has managed to download google! Do you know how I can now delete google? I cant seem to find a way. I will then stop access to apps.
To delete an app just touch and hold the app until all the apps start to wiggle. Then tap the circled minus sign by the app you want to delete.
You can turn on a Restrictions that prevent deleting apps. In that case you will not see the circled minus sign.
You can't delete the apps that came with the iPod but yo can hide some of them by Restrictions.

In order to download ANYTHING you must have an Apple ID. If you son has an Apple ID, then YOU need to take control of it. The easiest way to do that is have him tell you his password so you can log on and change it. If he is using an ID that belongs to some one else, then you need to tell that person to change their password and to not give it to your son.
This will keep him from downloading things you don't want him to have.
One other thing you need to do after you have control of his Apple ID is delete the app from the iTunes library that your son syncs to. The point is, you can delete an app from the iPod and all he has to do is connect to iTunes and click Synch. To do this, connect the iPod to the computer. When iTunes comes up, Click Apps. This will show the apps in the library. At this point you can delete to your hearts content, and since he won't have access via an Apple ID, he can't download it again....
The web browsing is another issue all together because its pretty much all or nothing. What I would recommend is that you configure your home router to restrict when and for how long your son can be on-line. Then, make it a point to share his on-line travels with him. Ohh and Ahh over what he looks at, and encourage him to seek knowledge over gratification... Trust me, it works....
I went through this with my 12 year old grandson, and we (his mother and I) had to get real strict real quick. We set some rules and the consequences were (at least by a 12 year old's standards) pretty harsh. Being without your "toys" for weeks at a time tends to get ones attention. Eventually the lights came on and he realized that we were actually trying to protect him and now he is acting in a much more responsible fashion.

Make sure you use GENERAL SETTINGS / RESTRICTIONS to control which apps are installed or deleted.
An app called Parentkit will allow you to remotely allow/disable apps/movies based on age limits.
