No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

Just do what I will be doing: don't buy a new iMac! 👿

With no Firewire you won't be able to connect your video camera either!

I must have had an epiphany 😀 ....... although, the lack of a DVD drive is less important to me than being able to run SL when needed. I've never put much faith in these super slim laptop style vertically installed drives where any media can shift by 1/1000th of an inch and mostly use an external FW burner which I've had for several years. The internal comes in handy occasionally when I need to copy one of my homemade DVDs to a blank DVD using both burners or an install disk.

Check the Apple store refurb section - inventory changes every 10 minutes or so and there can be some real finds occasionally. They've got two 2011 27" i5's right now.

David, You just keep spewing the same rediculous arguement. Tell us what is out there that has better playback quality than DVD/BluRay, what should people that don't want to store on the cloud do, also what is there for people that want to own a physical movie. By the way, How many hard drives should I buy to store my 250 movies, and should I back them up? Your reasonalble answers awaiting.

Buy a 59¢ DVD burner and when that goes south burners will be 49¢. BTW, the DVD format is a crappy format, and low tech.

Ja!! Just like the one button mouse!!!! Ja!!! But we had it for 22 years!!!!

Check!!

Und warum nicht?

Before making fun of people who prefer one thing over another, you might want to check if - besides the fact that they simply prefer it - there is a physical or medical reason that they are unable to use anything but that particular mouse or other device. Intolerance is not exactly a desirable trait - just as you are entitled to your opinion, others are entitled to theirs.

The issue that has been lost is that Apple refuses to support an optical drive when there are still millions of people using them. Being one of those millions that needs one and owns an older iMac looking to upgrade,it makes one very unhappy with a once loved company that has a certain agenda. That is not a physical or medical condition.

No, it's not - it is simply a personal preference which you (and anyone else) is entitled to. I was trying to address the fact that people are making fun of others for wanting (or needing) things that these people think is not necessary. As I said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Apple will do what it will do - each one of us has to adjust to it in our own way - I took care of my way when I purchased the iMac earlier this year (plus I have an external burner anyway).

If you have a medical condition I’m sorry that you have it… But I’m not sorry for what I said. It was a joke and a joke remains.

Why not????? SS style?? It’s not my style!!!!

Why not before making such a fuzz about a mouse desing you don’t remember the round mouse designed by apple? It had only one button and you couldn’t hold it with both hands…. They even made it optical afterwards!!!!! Don’t think they left it on one button just to help the guys that couldn’t use anything else…

What it’s low tech for some it’s high tech for others. The other day I gave away an old DVD player that I don’t use. The guy was fascinated!!! Of course I forgot the remote and he wanted to kill me, but then I found it and everything was Ok again!!!!

And as you said I think countless times, I value that you bought a wonderful iMac early this year refurbished and everything. Your opinion is valuable, your choice is valuable, but trying to keep the peace on this one it’s just not gona cut it…. I need that machine and been waiting for it and it’s not what I expected at all… But it’s till on my price range and on the kind of power I need… Just a crappy DVD solution…

Be mad at me or not that’s your choice too….

Cheers

Agree, but they have to realize that they may alienate customers and that some decisions will cost them, this might be one of them.
