No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

Just do what I will be doing: don't buy a new iMac! 👿

With no Firewire you won't be able to connect your video camera either!

Regrettably Apple had made mistakes in the past and now we are on one from the future. Argumentation on why they do what they do is a clear signal they made a mistake.... I hope it's not like the one button mouse... I think that if they were going to go that way they went shy and cold feet on their decision…

They should have made an all flash hard drive, an actual thin design and a better display (4K plus)… They didn’t and now they even deny DVD… Better is simply better not having to convince people that you made a good decision…

Cheers!!!

Everybody thought Apple jumped the gun when they released their early iMac - without a floppy drive. (Shocking! Ruinous!) Then, everyone dumped floppy drives.

Well now, in 2013, digital downloads are roughly 50% of the sales, and the numbers for digital downloads are growing every year. I can see how some see how the optical drive may be a legacy format - or at least on their way out.

The problem isn't that Apple made a bad call with their current iMac (or Retina). A lot of Mac users don't buy software or music CDs anymore; they download them. Users typically rent movies or digitally download them, but don't buy them. And while Windows 8 users have invested in a new generation of desktops that have the general design of an iMac, the iMac has shed the optical drive.

Did Apple jump the gun? I think so. But given the fact that a line of computers like the iMac has to be redesigned every half-decade or so, and optical drives were on the way out, Apple chose to jettison the optical drive. For $50 or so, you can buy an external superdrive.
