No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

Just do what I will be doing: don't buy a new iMac! 👿

With no Firewire you won't be able to connect your video camera either!

I understand the concept of purchasing the wrong machine and then complaining about it, as do you.

Buy what you need, not something that you don't!

You obviously don't. Just a hint...The iMac started as an a ll in one. That might have something to do with people being upset. Maybe you could find a forum where people like to pay more for less.

We are talking about you, not 'people'.

If you don't want the new iMac don't buy it, no one is forcing you (except maybe you)

Now you will need another ugly cable and external drive to continue using an optical drive. What is your SD card reader? You guessed it, yet another ugly cable

You're just making Apple's case for them by illustrating how diverse the range of peripheral devices has become - card readers, phones, optical drives, pen drives, hard drives, SSDs etc. All of them occasional use. There isn't any one of these that has a clear priority over the others in terms of popularity or mission criticality. Some users make intensive use of DvD's, others never use them at all or once in a blue moon.

What a sensible manufacturer needs to do in this situation is get shot of everything from base machine and make sure they support everything externally. I do not want a built in DvD but you do - so just buy yourself an external one and we'll both be happy. Otherwise I've got to suffer a peice of junk that I'm never going to use and which adds cost, weight and maintenance to anotherwise fine machine.

ant to upgrade the RAM in your new 21.5 inch iMac? You can forget about it, it's no longer possible.

Have you any idea how much RAM 4Gb represents ?

It's not that long ago since even hard drives didn't have that capacity. No - I won't likely be needing to upgrade from that elephantine amount but I accept that Steven Speilberg running Adobe Premier to the max for his next movie might, in which case, get a Mac Pro !

RAM upgrades hark back to an era when software could barely fit in the matchbox size memory. Those days are gone - the machine now comes with as much RAM as you're ever likely to need.

If you have paid attention to the posts, many people feel the same way as I do. Don't be a troll.

Have the courage of your own convictions at least .... stop trying to aggrandize yourself as part of a crowd of 'people'

We have no more to say to each other, hiding behind others is childish, and not a little cowardly.

You're right, it appears "many" customers are unhappy about this minor issue, which is easily resolved with an external drive that can be put away when not in use. But I don't think it's going to affect Apple at all, as I'm sure all of us on this community represent only a handful of customers compared to how many people out there that descended upon Apple's website in their droves to order the new slim iMacs, everyone knew what the new generation was about...surely? If people really want an iMac with an optical drive, then they can buy the previous generation?

I don't need to hide behind others. And please stop telling others what to do.

ok people, no need to start any flame wars.

We're not discussing fractional reserve banking, the national debt, 9/11 or global warming. Just whether a consumer item should contain a DvD drive or not.

Not worth falling out over.

I think we'd better all kiss and make up.

It might not effect Apple, no one knows yet. But I've heard many say that they now won't buy one. The impact might not be seen for a few years. Keep in mind that what is a minor issue to you might be the opposite to others.

Apple can't keep the new iMacs in stock... their flying off of the shelves!
