No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

Just do what I will be doing: don't buy a new iMac! 👿

With no Firewire you won't be able to connect your video camera either!

A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

That's exactly what they said when the iMac below came out.

You can check back with me 5 or 10 years from now. But currently, I will purchase no computer without a built-in optical drive.

I agree.........however, when you think about it, those laptop thin, vertically installed drives where any media can easily shift by 1/1000th of an inch, were never the best. Even though I use my external to burn and only use the Superdrive sparingly (when I need to copy something or for an OS/software install), I've had three out of four fail. There were all replaced free of charge under Applecare, but that's not the point.

I'm happy that they finally place the SD slot on the back!!! It's about time they did this... This means I won't be placing the SD card in the CD/DVD slot anymore by mistake... Wait a sec... I need to rethink this again. Back in a few hours.

Humbug! Belongs on the front where it doesn't have to compete with all those other input device's cables. DUMB and totally disfunctionial.

I do believe almost everything has been already said but to add more rage, madness, tears and even a sarcastic smile there is this sweet link.

What is almost impossible to detect what are the options to us visual artists?

Unless the big next step is MAGIC Apple is forgetting a huge segment of their customers that buy their products not only for their awesome design but for their productivity.

Honestly, and since this amputation is some kind of "new news" for me my options are:

Not buy it (the thinner iPhone inspired iMac)

An external drive

or
.(?)

I think Computers are dead as we know them, Apple's big money is iPhones/iPads/iPods, & we're forced to adapt to those crazy people that come into my store & want me to stand there for a half hour or more while flick, pinch, sqeeze, trying to find a pic of the fish they have no idea what it is & didn't buy from me, but has problems. 😟

Dumber still but rarely getting any mention is putting the headphone jack on the back. It makes sense to put it there only if you assume everyone will always use headphones (or an auxiliary sound system) with an iMac. I could be wrong but I don't think that's true for very many users.

If the jack must go on the back for some reason, at least there should be an easy to use, built-in option to switch between the built-in speakers & headphones that can remain plugged in without killing the speakers, ideally with separately adjustable volume levels for each.

I think is great that they have a policy towards common users. It's normal that as a common user, when you enter the apple world, having what they give you is a great option cause they've thought about every detail in order to make your experience of use easier and definitely great. For me it’s always been a plus.

But they’ve obviously forgot the audio/video guys. The new iMac 27” have almost the same port solution (USB Thunderbolt) as the Mac mini, I don’t get that. For me that I do weddings the DVD optic drive option is not only necessary but fundamental. The momentum that a DVD represents, with the face of the bride on the DVD or whatever, and a book with the wedding photos, is irreplaceable. Now a days there are web options and facebook or twiter options added for the wedding experience. But a solid book with “brochured” copies of photos and DVD’s can’t be replaced in that experience. Let’s not forget that apple provide a book service with aperture and iphoto if I’m not wrong. This is stuff you can’t change either.

Denying a good DVD or future bluray option it’s a bad professional move. On the one hand they provide a powerful computer obviously featured for those that need time saving solution on managing files and render, with the fusion drive, in my case they could just left a 1.4 TB all flash (the double of mac book pro retina) but would have scared people.

Some people compare the DVD solution to the floppy disk from 1998
By that time it was only logical 1.44 MB didn’t produce any business but to the guys who still sold them. And internet was growing big time providing the solution of sending little files through free email accounts
If I don’t remember badly by 2002 you could send 5MB by hotmail account, almost 3 times more than a floppy
 Today it’s not that easy

I don’t think this is just a facebook status checking machine, for that I have iPhone and iPad, they strip away the necessity of being able to provide different professional formats, or better said consumer formats trough what I consider a working computer. I think it’s definitely sad that they chose to take DVD away and not giving bluray solution that’s been asked for by consumer of private video and photo creation.

Many people will say or think that for that type of necessities we will be provided by a tower mac pro solution. But in this economy and turn of events of the digital world that is a solution that’s for a few lucky people that can charge for their equipment. More and more these days the payment of photo/video work it’s a global low payment that has no consideration for the equipment that you use. Since that’s a common coin in the profession, I as a professional tend to low cost in equipment in order to make a job viable of profit

It’s not my job to provide solutions but to demand them. I’ve used mac for a long time and have defended their every move. This I can’t, this is not a matter of religion or who knows better. The times of the mac being a struggling company are gone, now it’s on the top of the chain in a partnership with intel and many other top brands. I expect the best because I pay for the best.
