Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

Your dodge isn't even clever. You want to attack figures and the lack of attribution. Okay, so I know 10 people, myself included, and nine of us think they screwed up and you think they didn't = 90%!

This thread has less than a thousand individual posters, and roughly half of them do not agree that they (Apple) screwed up. Even by the most favorable math you can come up with that is less than 1%.

You can have your own opinions, but not your own facts.

So you have excluded the OP and all the others in this thread that think they hit a foul ball. Since it's a religion to you, it's going to be hard to see past your arrogance to realize it's a MISTAKE. That's okay, we can agree to disagree.

Childish numbers? I liked that one.

Good, we will agree to disagree, at some point in the future (about which I know nothing) you'll be able to see if you were right.

No, the OP just awarded me the helpful points (10 minutes ago) so they're not being ignored, check it out for yourself in case you doubt my figures, one page previous.

By page 8, I found that 10 said they would not buy, 5 said it was basically a bad idea and I found only about 4 to 5 who shared your view. I don't feel like going through 64 more pages of repetitive posters but my initial instinct tells me you're full of it.

Congratulations on getting your 10 points. Don't spend them all in one place!

Please read again, it says 10 minutes, not 10 points.

I am glad that you have now identified 15 people who agree with you though, good work.

    Hi CSound,

Can't resist the greetings ... you're off in your favourite thread again.   Never did agree (on this one) but it's fun to read.

    Keep well.

Apple is pre-maturely moving to an era where content is purchased on-line.  There are still many $billions in music, video, and software, available on optical disk.  Then there's the issue of the SD slot being on the BACK of the new iMac.  The back, really?  And there is not one conveniently placed USB port to quickly connect USB devices.  I have ugly extension cables hanging off of the back of my 2011 iMac.  At least it has an SD card slot on the side which is easily accessible.

It's the principal of the thing -- Apple is tryng to push people to purchase content from them, while invonveniencing their customers.   Not to mention the stupidity of moving the SD card slot to the BACK of the iMac, and not having one conveniently placed USB port.  Again, easier to manufacture for Apple, inconvenient for Apple customers.

    Bernie,

From the perspective of a recent Apple convert, is it all really that big of a deal? Granted the sleek look of the aluminum iMac is marred by USB cables but surely appearance isn't anywhere near the top reason for choosing a Mac?

I frequently used my Window's CD-ROM drive but with the advent of flash drives (which most everyone has now), Dropbox or workgroup file sharing for the other computers in the same household - I rarely use it any longer (once in six months actually.) I really don't see our situation so much as being "forced by Apple" to do anything anymore than I saw M$ forcing me to do away with floppies or zip drives decades ago when they were no longer the standard on PCs. I saw it then (and now) as a benefit simply nudging me towards the inevitable.

I'd rather get used to the impending future now (gently) vs waking up one morning and finding out everyone else made the switch without me and and I'm left scrambling to learn and implement the new sharing processes.

    Just my opinion of course...

    regards,

    dave

Myself and many others in this and other forums, think the argument that the optical drive being antiquated is ludicrous.  There are still $billions in sales of videos, audio, and software.  I often use the the super drive in my 2011 iMac to rip CD's, burn movies, burn playlists, give photos and videos to friends, etc.  Not to mention the frequent use of optical media in the workplace.

Then there is the fact that Apple is the ONLY manufacturer which does NOT include any ports or slots in a conveniently accessible location.  Not one.  They moved the SD slot to the rear of the new iMac.  Brilliant.  This is all well and good for Apple and their manufacturing, but inconveniences customers.

All other manufacturers offer optical drives, slots, and ports, in conveniently accessible locations.  All of them.  Here's are just a few I quickly searched for:

So don't buy one. Get a Dell instead.
