Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

    I didn't buy one -- I'm holding on to my 2011 iMac.

Explain to me why you are so upset then?

Apple is designing the iMac so it is more convenient for them to manufacturer, while at the same time inconveniencing me with a lack of optical drive, no conveniently located USB ports, or SD slots.  They seem to have a take it or leave it attitude.  Well, I'm leaving it.

We'll see what the future brings...

Yes. That's what I have said.

As for the 'danging' cords I also dislike them, so I use a conveniently placed hub with 1 cable going to the iMac, that cable runs in a channel down the back of the iMac stand, voila, no 'dangling' cords.

The same method will work with a 2012/1 model as well.

But you seem to want your cords to 'dangle' from the front instead, ugghhh.

    Bernie,

I suspect you'll see your list dwindle in a few short years to near zero with CD-ROM drives except on servers perhaps due to legacy requirements in the pro market.

USB ports are another matter of course though fewer are currently being offered on consumer models from HP at least.  A sign of the times...

    regards,

    dave

P.S. I seriously doubt it's a "take it or leave it attitude" as their success in the marketplace so far points more towards they're listening to what the bulk of their customers want. You might not just be in that group.

That HP Spectra one looks nice if I had never had an iMac or other Apple computer before and i did not understand I expect I would walk by and get the Spectra.

As my father always said to me never in business sleep on your Loral’s you can be on the top one year and going down the next however big you are if you make a mistake “Windows 8 oh we are going to put back the START button because people don’t like it.

Most probably be forced into getting an optical drive but it is not the point its no longer an ALL IN ONE MACHINE.

It’s expensive and when people look for something now there after value for money or the ones in the real world i talk to are when they say why you got that iMac it costs loads.

Yes they last longer, but what you are say is we are going to be channeled into the decisions we make. may as well get a cheap PC and bin it when they remove the optical drive, some how I don’t think so.

Hello again Csound. It's me again. The troublesome 'fact finder'. Since you are so keen on facts, I decided to do some thread research during my lunch break. Guess what? You and your minions are a huge minority. As of page 50, 33 posters said they would not buy, 22 said it was a bad idea and you along with your minions total about 11. I'll even slip in 3 that are glad they bought along with one who said he didn't like the fact the optical drive was missing but he's get over it. That's 15 in your corner. That's 55 to 15. I, of course did not count those who were indifferent. What was that you was saying about less than 1000 individual posters? You're right. Less than 100 posters in this thread. Most of the posts are repeat posters, like this one and your nearly 100 posts. So you and those who see eye to eye with your point of view, as of page 50, was 27%. Not the 99% you earlier claimed. That makes those of us who dislike it very much at about 73%.

If you want, I'll complete my study when I have time but I think that's good enough a sampling to see the real direction this is going. Thanks for playing.

I'm more than capable. How about you? Your typical duck and dodge. Being you're most likely a secret moderator, I sure hope you don't work for Apple.

Tell you what.   Why not start a new thread and see if anything has changed.   In fact I will do so.
