I'm here as I have been since '05. I seek help from those kind enough to lend it. Your sole purpose seems to have morphed into a stern disciplinarian who has no tolerance for views other than his own. I can respectfully disagree with anyone as I have with other posters here. But you take it to a whole new level which of course encourages me to counter your 'obtusity' by pointing out your clear contradictions.
I made a decision based on the facts presented here. Notice I still got an iMac, just not the newest version. I've been a Mac user since 2002 and have 8 machines that I maintain, update and keep relatively trouble free. The newest iMac is the first Apple product that doesn't fit into our needs which concerns me for Apple's sake. Also, I'm associated with a school that is considering the purchase of WINDOZE machines because they, too, determined these new machines were not a good fit. It's sad because Apple is losing sales.

as they once stopped having floppy drives
opticals are going the ways of the dinos
so users should be prepared if they have special needs like
floppy, optical or dot matrix printers they will have to get external and often more expensive solutions
I don't use my optical drive much and would not overly object to having to buy an external one if my needs were big enough
though since my ps2 is dieing I'm using it currently to try to get an emulator to play the old discs

But my question is still, what are you trying to achieve here, iMacs no longer have an internal optical drive, that is the fact.
Now if you had planned on getting one and were disappointed that you can not I might see some relevance to your chagrin, but as you don't plan on getting one (and indeed chose a different model) I can only assume that you have taken up this campaign (unclear though it may be) for personal reasons.
As for your predictions for the future of Apple I will disagree.
