Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

    Good morning Csound 1,

That was a slow response.   My first thoughts ... where is Csound, this is his favourite thread.

    Hi There,

Always interested in new tech, and Ziatron & justamacguy have informed us of exciting developments.

How's life in Castle land, still having a heatwave?

Hi there;  today threatens the first real day of rain for ages ... and I'm off to France to look for a chateau in a couple of weeks.   Keep well.

I think Ziatron was making a tongue-in-cheek reference to existing DVD & BluRay discs, not the developing technology that justamacguy was talking about.

The Sony/Panasonic system is apparently intended for commercial archiving of movies & other large data stores, not for consumer use. Only time will tell but my guess is that when it actually comes to market, it will be as an external drive housed in a commercial grade case with its own power supply & cooling system, so if you want & can afford one you aren't going to be able to get it in any "all-in-one" anyway.

Which is kind of the point some of us have been trying to make about this: using external optical drives give you a lot more options, including easily upgrading to the latest technology.

I really like your comment!  I just upgraged my older imac to a brand new one and what a bummer.... I spent about 1/2 an hour on the phone with apple support but no luck on idvd....like you said - they have their own vision & don't care about our vision... I'm 43 and I don't see myself posting my personal videos all over the net & social media... I want to be able to finalize my memories and make a beautiful dvd that i can share with my family & friends and have something in my hands versus massive storage on icloud that can dessappear one day....Just waisted my entire weekend trying to burn my projects on dvd & trying to figure out which software will replace it... just purchased "dvd creator" from app store but no luck - I have an error message after burnning & damaging disk & it does not play...apple, apple - I'm really dissapointed & unhappy without "idvd"....

    Yup, got that thanks.

Kind of funny... when I quoted optical for cheap, reliable, archive several people rushed in here to claim how unreliable optical is. I'm sure glad these smart people were here to correct me. Cause Sony and Panasonic are really dumb. "As the companies explained, optical discs are "a robust medium for long-term storage of content."

You do realise that this collaboration has not produced any product yet, just marketing slogans and mission statements.

Blu-Ray M-Disc is now available with 25gb of permanent storage. I need only 2 discs to back up all my important documents, photos and music. Not bad at all.

Unfortunately macs don't work with Blu-Ray disks, but an external drive may work.

Here's one more correction for you: It isn't the optical discs that are the problem; it is the built-in drives (particularly the low profile slot loading ones) that have a poor track record for long lasting & trouble free performance.

The Sony/Panasonic system drives (assuming they actually come to market, of course) may well be better, but that's because they aren't targeted at consumers & probably will be built robustly for commercial users -- with a price to match. And until we see prices for the media, we won't know how cheap an archival medium it is.

So buy an external drive capable of burning M-Discs. There are currently about a dozen to choose from, almost all made by LG. All the internal, high performance ones are large, designed for the optical drive bays in tower style computers or stand alone, powered cases. (A lot of heat is produced when burning M-Discs, requiring good cooling & a robust power supply.)

However, several of the externals are compact, USB powered units. They can't burn discs as fast & may require the use of two USB ports to get enough power to burn M-Discs, but for portable use away from AC power they are your only option. (They are also all tray loaders, which I think will pay off in terms of longer service life.)

Well, Apple might think the optical is dead... but others don't. Sony and Pansonic prepare to release an optical drive with between 300 gig and 1.5 tb by early 2015. http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201307/13-0729E/

Consumers will want these systems also.  Most motion pictures now are shot in 4K (about 4 times the resolution of current 1080p).

As of about a week ago Apple was still giving away iDVD to Macintosh purchasers who owned their machines less than 15 days.  You MUST speak to the second-tier people, the first-tier people cannot do it.

I want to be able to finalize my memories and make a beautiful dvd that i can share with my family & friends and have something in my hands versus massive storage on icloud that can dessappear one day.

The other thing about making a DVD is that when you mail it to family and friends they WILL watch it.  If you e-mail me a link to an online video it usually gets deleted.

I'm really dissapointed & unhappy without "idvd"....

IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.

IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.  (works with all Mac OS 10.5 and newer.)
