Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

 

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

 

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

 

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

 

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

    You are right but after I had mine imac and cheap overprice laptop apple is so overprice you pay more for less

    well - there goes my new iMac upgrade. I need a DVD drive and I'm darned if I shall buy an external one. Whats the point in having a sleek all in one - when it isnt.  I dont want my desktop littered with external hardware (I may as well have a pc). I resent being coerced into paying for cloud storage and you cant supply clients with their memories on cloud !

     

    Another one bites the dust.

    My teenage son is an avid video editor. He is now looking into entering high school video contests including a regional contest for our state and several other national contests as well.

     

    From reading the contest requirements for the upcoming year 2013, it appears that most all of them require finished DVD disks "that will play in any DVD player." My son regularly uploads video to his YouTube channel but up till now has not had a need to produce DVD disks.

     

    I am personally very experienced with using my old iMac with iMovie and iDVD and regularly produce DVDs for family events, my student's performances at the private school where I teach, and for instructional videos which I market and distribute.

     

    However my son has a late model iMac with Mountain Lion and I will be soon upgrading to a new computer as well, probably one the new iMacs when they come out. I see no signs of a diminished need to produce actual DVDs for this coming year for myself, and now I see that my son will need to make some as well.

     

    So my question to the MacInTouch readership is for advice as to the best strategy to proceed forward, first for my son, in order to enter video contests for this upcoming year, and secondly, for me to be able to continue to easily make video DVDs after I move to a new iMac.

    I can't help but wonder how many Apple-proprietary surprises the new 5-mm edge iMacs will bring. Macs are slowly but surely becoming user UN-upgradeable. I found this out the hard way a long time ago.

    Well...when all the folks that now "hate" Apple because of the elimination of the DVD drive in the new iMac's and are going back to PC's according to some statements here...I wonder how long it will take for the "regrets" to set in?

     

    I envy those that do switch however. They can now enjoy the wonderful work days keeping up with the latest virus, hackers, spyware, and all the other requirements that are necessary just to keep Window's working reliably on a daily basis.

     

    Me? Oh yes, I'll just pony up the external DVD drive along with the necessary software to run it.

    @virg - thats just the point - why should you pony up for a DVD drive. Its obvious that drives are still used and still necessary for anyone who needs to produce work for someone else. You can't tell a client your stuff is available in the Cloud and at the moment it certainly is not good practice (or economy) to hand a client a flash drive large enough to handle videos. We buy Macs for the whole package - and we are simply not getting the whole package any longer. I resent being forced to store my own stuff in the cloud and eventually have to pay for the privilege to access it. Good for you if you are happy to pony up for extra hardware and pay to store your stuff elsewhere. This all smacks of the old IBM attitude - 'pay us to crunch your numbers or go without'. I hope Apple are listening and give one the opportunity to add a DVD drive in a new Mac if one is needed. That would be the smart business approach to keeping customers. I have used Macs since the Classic and the II LC. I have iMacs, iPhones, Macbooks and iPad3.  I shan't buy another one without a DVD drive and my Mac support will stop with my current iMac if internal DVD drives are not made available.  I'd rather have a 1" deep Mac and have a DVD drive than a thin-edged screen and not the hardware I need. Nuff said. I'm disappointed.

    Yeah, hope they quit calling it an All-in-one now... & have you seen how ugly the new/not released thin iMacs are from the side?

    It looks Pregnant!   Maybe it will give birth to an Alien!!  No FireWire, no DVD, Fusion specific Disk Utility that only allows 1 additional partition, inability to ugrade RAM in 21.5",  talk about dumbing down a product line. I think they have achieved the AMC Pacer of the Apple lineup.

    OMG I'll need a much bigger pocket to carry my iOS 27" iMac in!!!   Apple really needs to rethink their direction for a platform that meets User needs, not some 20-30 something's web-surfing fetishes.
