Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

Craig Federighi, who previously served as VP of Mac software, will now be in charge of both iOS and OS X. Apple says this move will help unify software strategy across the two platforms

Is there someway I can make Craig stand there for hours while my customers flick, flack, wave, dance, hop on one foot while looking through there phone for a certain pic they want to show me???

well - there goes my new iMac upgrade. I need a DVD drive and I'm darned if I shall buy an external one. Whats the point in having a sleek all in one - when it isnt.  I dont want my desktop littered with external hardware (I may as well have a pc).

This what I did, has TWO built-in DVD drives!  http://www.apple.com/macpro/design.html

I resent being coerced into paying for cloud storage and you cant supply clients with their memories on cloud !

    Is this why ?

Holy........ I am glad I do not do Facebook, or any other social networking site, and try to keep my presence and information as minimal as possible. This is scary. Time to consider moving....

Easy to replace/upgrade too!! Must be nice to have extra money these days. I was debating with myself about a Pro but I ended up getting a macmini i7 2.66 added 16GB RAM and a 240GB SSD 6G that Disk Utility turned into a Fusion with the installed 1TB HD 5400. It clocks 11998 on Geekbench.

No kidding... Big Brother has arrived at the Ball. Nothing is sacred or secret anymore. Just looking at websites or blogging will get you on someone's list (and you'll never be taken off, even if you die). Using your credit cards is a great profiling tool. You can definately tell a lot about a person by what he spends his money on. Cash and carry fo me.

I can't belive that Apple will not offer an optical drive option. I often use the superdrive in my 2011 iMac to rip CD's, burn movies, burn playlists, give photos and videos to friends, etc. Since I bought a MacBook Pro Retina, I've had to purchase an external optical drive, for the times I need it. For example, during hurricane Sandy, I plugged in the drive and watched a couple of movies when the power was out.

In my opinion, sacrificing functionality for the sake of thinness is a step backwards. I don't care how thin the desktop is -- I'm only looking at it from the front anyway! I also found that the card reader is now located on the back.  Now that's convenient!.   I often use my card reader to transfer images from my DSLR camera and scanner.  Now I would need another ugly extension cable and external card reader? I already have two of them hanging from the back of my iMac, just so I can plugin usb devices. It looks like crap.  And no firewire? I have two 2 TB Western Digital drives daisy chained from my firewire port, and sometimes use it to connect friends and families video camera to digitize movies.  I guess I have to buy an adapter.

I find it remarkable that sales of CD's and DVD's number in the $billions, yet Apple and some in this forum think that optical drive technology is antiquated.  That's not the case at all.  If you don't have an optical drive, then you are being pushed to purchase your content from the iTunes store.  Hmmmm.

Give me a 1" thick iMac with most of the ports and optical drive easily accessible on the side!  What happened to the idea of an "all in one"?   I love Mac OS X, but am extremely disappointed with the direction of the iMac, and will not be upgrading my current iMac for a long time.

I agree, there will no doubt be adapters available for firewire use. As far as the drive, yes it's something to get used to not having built-in .... but after heavy use with my internal superdrive, over about seven years, the thing needed to be replaced, which cost me money to have the Mac taken in and have the DVD drive updated. Also, when originally put in, I was never really able to update the DVD/CD internal drive. With an external DVD/CD drive I see it as easier to upgrade or switch to blue-ray in the future. Apple sells a really thin and small external Superdrive that will also no doubt be compatible with the new 2012 iMacs.

You could even keep a DVD/CD drive stored with this rear shel adapter that will also probably be updated for use in the newer 2012 iMacs

(agreed it detracts from the overall new iMac design .... but what'ya gonna do?):

I will be buying a new 2012 iMac simply because it sounds like Apple has finally solved/offered a somewhat "antiglare" screen for the iMac. It was the primary reason why I couldn't get excited about buying one of the horrible "glossy glass" iMac versions!

I agree this totally *****. They killed off so many potential buyers, most would just stick with a Macbook now. They're moving ahead way too fast and losing a huge chunk of their customer base. This move was at least 5 years too soon. Oh well, back to Microsoft I go!!

I have been waiting to purchase a new iMac. I have Apple products but have primairly been a PC user. With Windows 8 coming out I figured if I had to learn something new I might as well learn Mac right? I love thier phone and their iPod, but now I hear that the new iMac will not have a DVD drive and it has completely turned me off from this product. It takes away from the value of the purchase as you have to pay more something I could have bought in the old iMac but unfortunately can now no longer get. It also takes away from the sleek look having this exteral drive and wires cluttering things up. Back to the PC for me...

Indeed, but Win8 is the only OS worse than 10.7/10.8 in my testing... if you go PC/Windows, get Win 7, last useable OS from MS methinks.

Removing the optical drive was pure STUPID!!!!!  At this point in time it's to soon.  Granted on down the line this would make sense, but right now it DOESN'T.  iMovie, burning CD's for the car, etc., just to soon.  Thank goodness I have the iMac from 3 years ago....I'll be KEEPING this for a very long while!
