Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

This discussion is all a bit academic at the moment since it appears that these new iMacs are indeed delayed according to MacBidouille

The whole point of this discussion is that the iMac is no longer an all in one and the fact that Apple has an agenda by removing the optical drive way too soon, with little regard for their customers needs. We know you can add a usb drive....all at an additional cost on top of a price increase.

Sorry, it's my job!    I raised all these points within the first half dozen posts.   I deserve the nomination (and the salary to go with it).

But there'd be a problem not having a green card     You wouldn't want to be one of those illegal immigrants, now would you????

I've got one, believe it or not     It's a bit dated and may need renewal but I worked for a group of US Department Stores for many years.

Hahaha, those things expire unless you visit the US twice a year (not sure of the current rules, but that was a rule years ago). Can't just "renew" it - have to go through the application process again first. And you'd need character witnesses.......

Well I was all set to go for an IMAC for the first time - my HP laptop has just failed - but no DVD writer means I am thinking again.

"It should also be noted that the latest iMac does not come with a DVD drive, but that Apple does offer their USB SuperDrive as an add-on for $79. It is capable of burning CDs, DVDs, and dual-layer DVDs. Other manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, and Seatech offer external drives compatible with Apple products starting under $40."

WHERE IS THE ALL IN ONE CONCEPT!? Clean table and everything else. WT.. APPLE!!! Ok, my MBPro sends information that I haven't been using my DVD drive so much, but Apple, you could not do that, yet. What about my Series, you should put a BluRay drive also, not remove the DVD one. And that "SuperDrive" doesn't read BluRay too!!!

And what if I would like to buy and install a new game? So, I'm not able to do that, is that you are telling me?

No, you cannot install games from DVD -- You need to buy them from Apple!

I wonder if Apple even considered how the lack of an optical drive might impact their penetration into the business marked?  I can't imagine having workstations at work without optical drives, or having to buy and plugin drives over and over again!
