Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

Is there something wrong with buying a usb 3.0 burner? Pretty hard to fit a dvd drive that is well thicker than the 5.8 mm thin computer

I don't believe there is anything wrong with a USB burner - I prefer Firewire, but have to admit not having tried one with USB3. The USB2 is too slow for me.

I've had an external FW burner for years, but I still won't be buying a new iMac - there are other things I'm not enthralled with. Fortunately, I must have known it was coming because I decided to buy an iMac earlier this year and it's covered by Applecare until March 2015. This one runs Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion, so I can still use what I need when I boot into SL.

I use a Samsung SE-SO84 external DVD burner that requires 2xUSB2 connection. Works better and slightly faster than the (failed) built-in Superdrive, both from iDVD 7 as well as Toast.

And it was less than $45!

Yeah there is something wrong with buying one, when the previous iMac had one and they could have designed an iMac with one. Maybe you like to get less for more? I Don't.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

I would recommend a Mac Pro.  Mine has two DVD drives (one is a Blu-Ray).  Love it !

For me it's not just the performance of the Mac Pro but more the super easy servicing and upgradability.

I can literally change or add a hard drive in 60 seconds.

I have added Blu-Ray DVD drives, additional FireWire ports, SATA ports and memory (all INSIDE the case) with almost zero effort.

(Sounding like Darth Vader.) "You don't know the POWER of the Mac Pro."

Do you advise to complain on HP or Dell forums?

Only at the edges. Look again, it's about the same thickness in the middle as before. Reduced volume about 40%, which means nothing since you only deal with the front 2-D display. One minus is having the SDXC card slot in back, really cumbersome placement. should have been in front, even it that defeats the "wow, look how clean it looks"—violating the "functionality is paramount" paradigm.  Wonder how many will be knocking it around trying to fine the slot amongst those other input cables?

I think the "Thin" feature is laughable, no diff from the normal viewing angle, downright ugly from a side view... & for what???

In order to "refresh" the line and make the iMac something that every iDevice owner wants - I think it's called marketing and they are superb at it. Form over function. I may have purchased my last iMac last February.

To reduce the volume up to 40% and reduce the weight from 31 to 21 pounds. Additionally, it fits their make everything wireless and cloud-dependent, promoting polluting the airways with EMR/EMI and wasting resources DLing everything, instead of providing OSs on DVDs.
