Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

 

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

 

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

 

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

 

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

    Don't worry, next time Tim Cook is left stationary whilst he tries to drive away in his Audi or BMW car and is told that the most recent software upgrade deleted the tyres, am sure he will be happy - soon the car technology will catch up in five or ten years. In the meantime don't hold the steering wheel in the same position you idiot because we know best

    I have no intention of purchasing one of these anorexic and dysfunctional "all in one" iMacs.   Fortunately I have a 2011 iMac, which I won't be replacing for about two years.  I'll see what's available at that time.  It's unfortunate, because I love OS X.

    Yea, that's real convenient, connecting and disconnecting the optical drive every time you use it.  And you're forgetting about all those other ugly cables you need to leave dangling so you can redily connect a usb device or two, and now in addition another cable for the SD card reader.

    Making the case for apple?  Have you actually read this thread?  The vast majority of posters indicate they still use an optical drive.  And not having a USB port redily available to connect USB devices, and an SD card reader readily available for camera cards, scanner cards, etc., is simply asenine.  These aren't infrequently used connections by any stretch.  If you believe that, you didn't just drink the apple juice, you showered in it.

    It's not just about the superdrive.  It's about connecting and disconnecting the optical drive every time you need use it, unless you want more crap hanging off of your iMac.  And you're forgetting about all those other ugly cables you need to leave dangling so you can redily connect a usb device or two, and now in addition another cable for the SD card reader.

    I am rockin' a mac mini server but, I don't mind the superdrive resting on top of it or moving from machine to machine. I also have a 1st gen MacBook air. We have a network of 6 mac's and a PC or 2 and ony two of the mac's have optical. My brother has a 15" MacBook Pro which he removed the optical to replace it with a second hard drive. We also have a Mac Pro that we removed both opticals to once again add more storage. The 24" iMac and an older mac mini both have opticals but, they are rarely used (the opticals that is) at least in my house.

They are obviously trying to divert attention from the issue of the optical drive removal, and inconveniently located USB and SD ports, by diluting this thread with post after post of non-related "noise".  I don't know if they work for apple, or just drank too much apple juice, but the majority of their posts are boyish drivel.

    "Boyish drivel"? Are you that offended by other peoples opinions? And as for the usb's left hanging ....well instead of being lazy, if one wants a clean and tidy desktop, here's just a small idea: unplug the usb and put that away until you need to use it again too! I just don't understand why people find it such an issue, are people that lazy that they can't be bothered to unplug something, an external superdrive for example lol, into a drawer at arm's length?

    I like to burn videos of my children for friends and family, which is one of the many uses for the optical drive.  I regret purchasing the MBP retina because it does not have a drive, and I have to connect the my external drive every time I need to use it.

     

    But I love the retina display though!
