Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

I don't plan to buy it, and many other's I've conversed with on the subject will not be buying it.  Gee, I didn't know you were an official "Apple type".  Well.........

At my house we have two iMacs, a 15" MacBook Pro Retina, an iPad I, II, and III, two iPhone 4s's, four ATV's, and two iPod touches.   I've written apps for the iPhone and Mac OS X.  So, I guess you could say I'm an Apple type to.  I love OS X.  However, I do not like the direction Apple has taken the iMac in, and neither do many others.  If Apple has the same attitude that General Motors had, with a mentality of "What's good for Apple is good for America", they will ultimately fail, regardless of their recent success.

Seems to me if you're not satisfied with the new iMac; don't buy it!

Be careful, you are introducing common sense to a poster who shuns it, this may go bad

I have a 2009 and 2010 iMac and I Am well aware that the SD "slot" is on the side of these models.

I guess you do not know the difference between "slots" and "ports".  I clearly stated ports. Like USB, FW, audio, headphone  and Thunderbolt/Mini DV ports.

They have always been on the backside of iMacs. This is your issue not mine.

I Do not like looking at various interface cables sticking out the sides of my computer like a wired up Frankenstein-like computer.

And, as far as the camera card slot is concerned, it is a useless slot for me as I use Sony memory sticks and CF cards in all my cameras and video recorders. The card slot is only an SD style card slot.

I'm well aware of the difference between a port and a slot.  You might have ONLY been talking about ports, but I was stating that ALL ports, AND the SD card slot is now inconveniently located on the BACK of the new iMac.  SD card slots are hardly "useless" for the vast majority of people, which is why they include them on almost all new desktops.  Of course no one wants interface cables hanging from the sides of their computers, which is why most manufacturers place the majority of the ports on the back -- But also have a port or two conveniently located on the side for quickly connecting and disconnecting USB devices, as the picture below illistrates.  To bad it's full of Windows junk.

    1. It is a desktop computer, not a portable. There is no real advantage in being able to "handle it" it in one hand.

    2. If you don't have at least one external peripheral (an external backup drive) you are living dangerously.

    3. The new super-slim iMacs are significantly lighter than previous ones. If you do need to move one (using both hands!) you will probably notice that.

    4. What you get for this compromise is the coolest running, quietest, & most powerful iMacs ever made.

You can't please everybody, no matter who you are. There has never been an iMac (or for that matter, any other AIO) made that included every feature every user wanted. And yet, iMacs have always sold quite well, even though the competition offers cheaper AIO's with far more built-to-order options than iMacs ever have had.

It isn't hard to see why. While iMacs don't include everything the competition does, what they do include is carefully engineered to deliver a superior user experience.

The new iMacs are no exception. Use one for a while like I have & some things that no spec sheet or advertising blurb adequately describes become obvious. They run extraordinary cool & quiet -- even after hours of intensive use I have yet to hear the fan once (even in a dead quiet room) or feel the case rise more than a few degrees above room temperature. The sound system is remarkably good, somehow producing substantially more bass output than any of the older & thicker iMacs. Just like several reviewers have mentioned, the one word that best describes the display is "awesome." The built-in dual mics do an amazing job of suppressing ambient noise.

And believe it or not, the thinness & curved back make it much easier than you might think to access the ports in actual use. Sure, it isn't as easy as if the ports were on the side but with a little practice it is fairly easy to find them by feel, & with the exception of the tiny Thunderbolt ports get everything aligned & plugged in with minimal hassle.

If the port placement and/or lack of built-in optical drive are a deal breaker for you, I get it. This is not the AIO for you. But nevertheless, it is an amazingly good AIO, easily the best one I have ever used. And it is selling quite well, so I doubt I'm the only one that thinks so.

Nobody is asking for every feature to be built in to the iMac, just useful, still relevant features that Apple used to provide. There really was no need for Apple to eliminate the optical drive, many people and companies still have a use for one.

Check out!!!! A peripheral to come out soon....

Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock - Thunderbolt Docking Station

So... some decided to make actual profit out of the lacking of imac’s specs!!!! Hope they make this hideous thing with top pro card reader… So far… It’s good (actual plus ports of all the stuff we’ve been buying these years), expensive, awkward looking, and regrettably; not from apple, not included in the imac (let’s say a pro model of imac) and doesn’t look to upgradable….
