Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

No thanks, you are incompetent at pretty much everything you have tried thus far, I am sure that you would be a lousy date as well.

    Bye.

Csound1 If you don't have anything of use to say please keep your trolling arrogant comments to yourself. Get a life guy.

I Think it's you and pipogoro that should "keep your trolling, arrogant comments to yourself and get a life!

Csound1 is a strong contributor and help to many here on these forums. Csound has racked up nearly 20,000 points and level 6 status here because his knowledge, advice and opinions are based upon years of experience with Macs.

I am tired, of late, of seeing the level of disrespect for experienced forum users from many 0 or nearly 0 level, 0 point posters who are mainly here to troll these help forums and argue about an Apple product that they probably don't even own.

These Apple support forums are for the use of new users to get technical help and advice from more experienced users that can help them.

These forums aren't a place for trolling, arguments and debates and petty fighting or name calling.

If the missing features in the new iMac are that big a deal breaker for all of you who are complaining, then don't purchase one of these and find another more useful alternative that meets your needs.

    It's that simple.

These new iMacs aren't  for any of you who are vehemently complaining and whining!

I don't like the missing features, either, but that may or maynot be a deterrent or deal breaker for me,  down the road, if I need a new Mac or iMac.

The fact that they are faster and run cooler may be what will push me toward purchasing a new iMac in the future.

Who knows and who knows what Apple has in store for the future of the iMac.

Yes I can see from all his comments and advice on this discussion just how valuable and knowledgable he is. And what exactly did I say that was horrible be fore his ridiculous response to my post?

    Fred,

Sorry, a little. Just venting. I don't want or like seeing threads that degrade to something like grade-school playground level arguing.

I think that was really what I was trying to strongly get across, here.

Plus, I think this thread is getting to be redundant to a certain extent.

Apple is doing what Apple wants to do and isn't suddenly going to backtrack to an earlier design in the future.

I Think from here on in, iMacs no longer have optical drives.

    End of story.

I think if you need an new or newer iMac five years from now, this new generation will be your only options at that point.

Relation to deleted post on the issue of this gadget.

    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/echo15thunderboltdock.html

    To MichelPM

I think the same MichelPM. Specially on the overpriced issue!!! I've seen that thunderbolt it's getting upgraded also. It's really a shame that this sonnet thing it's comming to the world already outdated. Think also that if it's going to be bulky and on that price range it should be a better module, should add card reader, pro card reader would hit the spot. But it's gonna have to do for now.... Hope those USB are 2.0 compatible for my card reader.

Meaning bulky and a shame not designed by apple

Frankly I think it is time to shelve this entire issue.   If Apple don't know by now that there is much disquiet about the lack of a DVD facility, then they never will.

So, to summarize this thread--and I won't bother mentioning all the tangents and red herrings that abound in the thread...

    1. Some think the lack of a CD/DVD drive on the 'new' iMacs is a problem.
    2. Some do not think the lack of a CD/DVD drive is important at all.
    3. Everyone has an opinion.
    4. Some think their opinion is the best.
    5. Apple is losing it.
    6. Apple is the smartest company on the planet.
    7. Some think that if you don't agree with them then you're (a) <insert favorite deogoratory noun here>.
    8. Putting the SDHC slot on the back is unfortunate, ill-concieved, or just plain stupid.
    9. Putting the SDHC slot on the back is of no real consequence.
    10. Removing the "Line In" audio is a major mistake.
    11. Removing the "Line In" audio isn't important at all.
    12. The CD/DVD drives in earlier iMac products were inferior and more expensive than 3rd party alternatives.
    13. The Apple SuperDrive will work with iMacs without a built in CD/DVD.
    14. The Apple SuperDrive is inferior in quality, less reliable, and much higher priced than 3rd party alternatives.
    15. No one has changed anyone's opinion.

Not much to glean from the nearly 54 pages this thread currently occupies.
