Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

Looks like the market is speaking. Here is what the analyst say for the next MacBook release:

    What analyst?

    KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

And he would have access to the Apples future production plans how?

Don't ask me.  All I did was answer the question you asked as to which analyst made the quoted statement. Something that took me all of 10 seconds to find with a Google search.

If you look at my sig you'll see that I've already made my choice about the need for a CD/DVD in an iMac.

I was trying to find out why you would say:

Looks like the market is speaking.

Without posting anything that supports the statement, but it doesn't matter, the market speaks for itself.

The market is speaking. The reason a new iMac isn't on my desk right now is because I don't want my desktop cluttered with unnecessary components such as external optical drives. My video professional friends, who used 24" iMacs in the past and want a new 27", are now considering a PC. They burn the initial DVD's for wedding and legal videos. I've been waiting for Apple to royally screw up and they've done it in record time. At work, we don't have a new iMac because not only have they disabled SMB file sharing in favor of their own, non-functioning hazardous wasteland, which is a must with our digital production machines, but no optical drive further renders the 8+ years worth of DVD's and CD's virtually useless unless we opt for another external unit to further clutter the desk. The all-in-one is not so all-in-one anymore.

Anybody who burns DVDs for a living would use an external burner. Apple's DVD burners can be unrealizable and subject to failure.

Not sure about that, but unreliable certainly!

The reason a new iMac isn't on my desk right now is because I don't want my desktop cluttered with unnecessary components such as external optical drives.

We switched our primary computers from iMacs to Mac Pro's.  I wouldn't take the new iMac for free.

All of our Mac Pros are equipped with 2 built-in optical drives. After heavy use we had to replace one optical drive took about 5 min. to change.

My video professional friends, who used 24" iMacs in the past and want a new 27", are now considering a PC.

I have been an Apple customer since 1979 and a Macintosh customer since 1984. In the last year for the 1st time ever I've had several friends and colleagues switch from Macintosh to Windows due to the lack of an optical drive. Usually I'm able to convince them to purchase a Mac Pro, but not always.

...and Apple has never been wrong about what hardware customers need. Oh, well... maybe except for that little thing about not having firewire in a laptop a few years back. That went over well.

An analyst or anyone else does not necessarily have to have access to Apple's future plans to tell what Apple is doing. All you need access to is the supply chain and the type of parts that Apple is buying. Duh...

And Kuo has a pretty good track record from his sources.

"Last year, Kuo was the first to detail a number of major changes to Apple's product lineup, including thediscontinuation of the 17-inch MacBook Pro, and that Apple would continue to sell the legacy MacBook Pro with disc drive alongside a new, thinner model inspired by the design of the MacBook Air.

Kuo also accurately forecast Apple's entire fall product lineup, including unexpected releases like a redesigned iPod nano and tweaked fourth-generation iPad with faster processor and Lightning connector.

The analyst also revealed months before the new, thinner iMacs were announced that the redesigned all-in-one desktops would be in short supply. Availability of the iMacs proved to be so constrained that Apple experienced supply issues well into 2013.

He is an analyst, no more, no less. He does not represent 'the market'

And let's not forget that we are referring to the analyst who failed to predict the removal of the DVD drive that is the subject of this thread.

Well, apparently some people want computers with options such as DVD/BluRay built in, along with other "more pro" career building features that they see will be used in the workplace. I would say Apple better take another look at how radically they are going to force people into their dream. When you lose a whole state education system (which you have had a previous contract in since 2002) I would say… the market is speaking.
