Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

The manufacturer's position at this moment is that they have no plans to make future software updates that support Apple's windows file sharing. We've already been warned NOT to upgrade past 10.6.

Do you normally let 3rd party vendors decide your upgrade strategy?

Are you referring to Konica Minolta? Or Apple? I make my decisions based on what's best for the company, not what's best for Apple or K-M. The intel iMac has a problem with the LCD screen. It will have to be replaced. Unfortunately, not with another iMac. Things are running smoothly right now and I have no intentions of browning it up by introducing probblems into our workflow. I take it you're someone who makes money off other people's problems.

Konica have decided to drop support for Apple.

The manufacturer's position at this moment is that they have no plans to make future software updates that support Apple's windows file sharing.

Thus you will switch to a Windows machine.

So, logic dictates that we replace one machine, the iMac work station we use to send jobs to the Fiery RIP, be a Windows based machine. I hate it, I don't like it but Apple has forced us into this decision with their short sighted stupidity

And this stupidity is caused by Apple?

Let me reverse this logic for you guys, since many of you believe having no optical drive doesn't hurt the sales of the new iMac: How many of you rushed to buy one because it did NOT have an optical drive?

That's pretty tortured logic. In the first place, you are just ignoring that Mac sales declined at half the rate of PC sales in the first three months of this year. What is your logical explanation for that?

And if it is really true that "No one wants to buy an all-in-one that's not an all-in-one," who is buying all these Macs that aren't? Besides, the whole idea of a true AIO is bogus. Nobody with any sense doesn't at least have a backup hard drive if they store anything important on their Mac (or PC) & there isn't a single conventional desktop computer I can think of that doesn't require at least an external keyboard & pointing device to be useable. So they are all at least "all-in-threes" even if a backup HD isn't part of the package.

But more to the point, it isn't about buying what's not there but about buying what is. For the new iMacs, it is all about buying a very powerful desktop computer that at the same time is amazingly cool & quiet running. It doesn't hurt that the new displays retain the sharpness & color fidelity of the top grade IPS glossy screens while simultaneously reducing their glare-producing reflectivity by 75%, or that every one of them is individually color-calibrated.

So if that isn't important to you or doesn't meet your needs even with an external optical drive then don't buy one! It really is is that simple. If you think Apple dropping built-in optical drives from iMacs is shortsighted stupidity, it would be foolish to invest in one.

You seem to have fractured logic. It's this thing known as 'cause' and 'effect'.

Yes, it is caused by Apple. Konica hasn't CHANGED anything. Apple did. If Apple still supported SMB, there would be no issue. Apple has touted for years their ability to work well with the PC environment and then they take steps backwards to create more issues.

I don't really care at this point. As far as I'm concerned, this is a dead issue. Apple isn't going to listen to their consumers which has, unfortunately, been their problem as of late. Continue to be an Apple apologist, as I once was, and you'll get left in the dusty remains of a once great company.

Sales are in decline. Period. I'm not going to guess as to all the reasons why. I know one of the reasons that will factor in.

I've looked at the machines. No doubt, they're beautiful. What was available September last year is what I want NOW as a consumer. Not what they have available. That's MY preference.

Yes, it's foolish to invest in one. That's why we're not buying one.

I used to watch VHS, but it changed, I used to send telegrams, but they are gone, my 8 tracks are just junk now.

Things change, just because you and Konica can't keep up is no reason that the rest of us should be swept up in the Luddite movement with you.

I don't really care at this point.

Clearly you do, otherwise why post here?

More useless comments from Csound. cwmmjm is simply describing real world examples of how apple is losing business because or their decisions. You say move on (8-track tapes...really?).

Eight tracks can be fun to listen too (Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon)... and can bring back good memories. Not so much with VHS. Beside you can set it up and tell the youngin it's a new format for listening to music. Also,  drag out the rotary phone just to mess it their little tender brains.

(If you have the Fuji optical disc in the caddy (before CDs came out). Drag that out and sell it as a new storage device. If you have the 8" SyQuest external drive (whopping 25 MB capacity) sell that to them too. Sell the Zip and Jaz discs as coffee coasters. I could never get a Jaz drives to last more than a week. If I remember right, the guy work worked on the Star Wars soundtrack daisy chained 64 Jaz drives to mix the soundtrack from.)

I gave my LP's to the young ones, I'm saving the 8 tracks for the Smithsonian

Clearly you get it. Forced obsolesence, as a rule, is bad marketing. Arrogant companies and individuals choose to make fun of consumers who reject their products rather than change their behavior and marketing strategy. It's all par for the course.
