Q: No DVD drive in new iMac ???

So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.

I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.

I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?

What ?

If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.

Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.

In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.

But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.

Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !

Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !

see ya

Look, Apple made a mistake and left out the DVD thinking everybody is done with them. They were wrong. You can't defend them really. All you have to do is ask the users if they use their DVD's.

Now you have to ask yourself why Apple would do such a thing? I'm guessing it is part of a plan to push content into their cloud so they can control it and make money off of it. They cannot control content on a portable media like DVD or CD.

This is about control of media. This has nothing to do with media becoming obsolete. Maybe in 10 years the media might change. But the people will get what they want. They will not wait for Apple to figure out what the customer wants.

Samsung will eat their lunch and smack their lips. This is not the time to make bad decisions.

    I did, they don't.

You have no way of knowing that -- Apple will not release the figures.  All we know is that the supply chain has grinded to a halt.  You do the math.

You think it's the best iMac yet?  No DVD drive.  An SD card slot on the back.  Not one USB port in a convenient location to quickly connect/disconnect devices.  No longer consumer replaceable RAM in the 27"?   Not in my opinion, or the opinion of many others.

Keep telling yourself that. Eventually you will believe it.

Actually, if you've been involved in as many threads as I have regarding the lack of a DVD drive in the new iMac, many users are ****** off and refuse to purchase one.  Many believe as do I that this is a heavy handed plot by Apple to push people into purchasing content from their store.

No DVD drive, plus an SD card slot on the back.  Not one USB port in a convenient location to quickly connect/disconnect devices.  No longer consumer replaceable RAM in the 27"?    Many people are not buying, which is why Apples supply chain has grinded to a halt.

How many users are you speaking of, do you have a link? or is this a guess?

I already believe it, no need to wait,

All you have to do is ask the users if they use their DVD's.

I did, 100% of the users I asked don't want a DVD drive.

What's the big deal about RAM upgradeability on a machine that ships with 8Gb ? Are you serious ? Have you any idea what nano-percentage of a percentage of the user base of a consumer level machine are going to want to upgrade from 8 Gb ?

When I read the kind of complaints that people have on here about the new iMacs, it really is barrel scraping stuff and just makes me realise what Apple's doing right. The USB ports have always been at the back on recent iMacs - thats just a standard design priority of that model, it's one of the things that characterises the design. What you look at when your working is screen estate and nothing else.

As far as the DvD stuff goes, get a life. I was sick to death of the things even though I do still occasionally use them. The day they got ditched couldn't come fast enough. For every whiner that can't be bothered to get themselves a $30 stonage DvD drive you'll find at least one customer like me thats breathing a sigh of relief that 3rd party mechanical contraptions are at last jettisoned.

Actually, it is only the smaller 21.5" iMac that doesn't have user replaceable RAM. And both that & the 27" model come with at least 8 GB installed, which is more than enough for most users.

The 27" one has four user accessible memory slots, each of which can accept an 8 GB module. Mine came with the default of two 4 GB modules. I have considered filling the other two slots but so far I have yet to see free memory dip below about 1.5 GB so there isn't much point in doing that.

    1. I don't miss worrying about a built-in slot loading DVD drive getting cranky about ejecting discs like with my previous iMac, or ejecting them so vigorously that they bounced off the desk like with the one before that. And I really don't miss worrying about a disc getting stuck in the drive & trying to figure out how to extract it through the narrow slot without damaging anything.

    2. It did not take me long to learn how to insert an SD card in the slot on the back by feel. It's actually quite easy to do. But you wouldn't know that because you have no experience with one.

    3. One of my USB ports is used for an external HD that doesn't get unplugged. My camera does get plugged & unplugged, but I usually leave a cable with the mating micro USB connector plugged into a port for that. When not in use, the free end sits conveniently on the foot of the iMac stand. I also use a wired Apple aluminum keyboard, which gives me two extra high power ports. I usually use one for a Kensington trackball & the other for USB thumb drives. But if I did not, I also have a couple of short, $3 USB extension cables I could use like I do for the camera.

And aside from that, it really isn't much of a hassle to reach around the back of this very thin iMac to plug things into its ports. It takes maybe three seconds, even when I'm particularly fumble-fingered.

    4. As I have already mentioned, you are wrong about the RAM. If it ever becomes necessary I can max it out at 32 GB. The procedure is very easy, requires no tools at all, & takes no more than a couple of minutes to do.

So once again, I think people are trying to make mountains out of molehills, & in some cases out of thin air. These new iMacs are fast, dead quiet, run cooler than you would believe possible without trying one out, have very high quality color corrected & nearly glare free displays, & easily the best sound system of any iMac ever.

But hey, if none of that is as important to you as the real & imagined minor shortcomings you keep mentioning, then don't get one.

The thing is, to most people that actually do any significant work on a Mac (as opposed to trainspotting geeks who spend all their spare time worrying about where the USB port is), Apple have got their priorities right.

If you spend 5-6 hours staring at a screen and 20 seconds connecting a device, its a kind of no-brainer where the design priority lies. Equally, to anyone with half a brain who's wrestled with broken optical drives, dust in the drive, scratched disks, it's totally ovbious that those things have had their day. (Quite apart from the fact that their storage capacity is microscoping in relation to their physical size).

But not apparently to trainspotting, barrel scraping geeks who are determined that their machine should continue to lug around an ageing peice of mechanical junk technology in its body at the expense of all other design priorities.

No problem - they are not the "target audience" for this machine (as many have already admitted by saying they're not buying one).

People like me are who actually want to get some work done on them.

It's hard to believe there are so many brainwashed in this forum.  Having an SD card slot on the back is not a problem?  Not havinging a single USB port in a convenient is not an issue?  I think you have it backwards -- There are too many geeks in the apple forums who drink the apple juice.  The conversations are much differnet in other Mac forums.

Look at the offerings for all-in-ones from other manufactures -- They ALL are much more user friendly!  Here are a couple I found in seconds:
