Printing from my ipad or iPhone to Airport express or extreme

can i print from my ipad to a printer connected to an airport express

G5, Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Yes, if your printer is AirPrint compatible. Check this Apple support document:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356

If your printer is not AirPrint compatible, you still might be able to print from the iPhone and iPad if you install an App like Print Central.

As I understand AirPrint, iPad connects directly to a compatible wifi enable printer. I'm asking why iPad cannot print to a shared printer connected to the USB printer port on the Apple airport.

airprint protocol is wireless only.. they take the air part of it seriously. It will not work via USB.
