I have a iPad 3 with the 30 pin charger. Today while looking at the comparison of the iPad mini and others, I saw that the iPad 3 now had the new lighting charger. If it does, can I exchange my iPad 3 for the iPad with the lightning charger?

If you bought your iPad 3 within the last 30 days, call your local Apple Store and ask about exchanging it.

I've had mine for a very long time. But what if I have a few years of warrenty?

    No you cannot exchange it.

Sorry, there's no way to exchange the device if its older than 30 days.

What does that have to do with anything?

The new full sized iPad is now the new 4th Generation IPad.....not an updated iPad3.  You will most likely be able to exhange your iPad 3 for a similary spec'd iPad 4 if you purchased within the last 30 days...otherwise I'm afraid you are out of luck.

I just read an Apple store in San Francisco will be exchanging iPad 3's that are 30 days old or newer. This is the store's policy, not Apple's. So I guess some retail locations will be receiving higher call volumes for the next couple of days. I wonder if it would be possible to exhange an iPad 3 for an equivalent iPad 4 if it's 43 days old today?....

If it's an Apple's Apple's policy...not the stores.  I think 30 days will be 30 exceptions.  Afterall...they are a business and where would they draw the line.

I think 30 days is pretty good of them....often it's only 14 days.

30 days would be awesome, as I I just bought this thing 23 days ago. Has anyone heard anything from Apple on this policy? The only official line I've heard is the regular 14 day return policy.

Had I bought this from any other retailer, I'd still de well within 30 days. I'd rather buy my Apple gear in their stores but this experience has me second guessing that. Microcenter often has them $50 cheaper than the MSRP.

I, for one, am very disappointed in this move by Apple.  It would be reasonable to offer an exchange for any 3rd Generation unit even if there was a charge associated considering the substantial upgrade has come just 6 months later.  To sunset this version so soon means the money I spend won't garner me even a full year at the product line's Alex. The 30 day window is a minimal effort at best.  I have never considered Apple to be a minimal effort company before.  It is a shame.

I agree with you. My issue is not with the device I have bought, but rather with what you have mentioned plus it is the iOS update support I am worried about. Before you were getting all the bells and whistles, and now each older gen has less and less support. Within months we are downgraded to second in line product. THAT's what *****... Same with thrid party applications with higher graphical prowess. How quickly now will our iPad be slaggish and not centered as a device worth supporting with a "specific" chip? iPad 2 and mini have an excuse as their screen is smaller in pxl density and it doesn't require as much power.
I am a very dissapointed customer untill I hear that what I have invested in, will in the matter of fact be supported in same way as 4th gen or at least have apple promise of buy-back price guarantee of what their previous devices were. IT IS A SHAME.

I bought 2 iPad 3s (16gb wi-fi & 64gb cellular) on 1st October in the Waterside, Naples store. I would very much like to exchange them for the 4th generation models, however, I'm now back in the UK and it's a bit impractical to take them back to Naples! I'm having trouble finding a contact email for Waterside, so I wonder if this "30 day return" policy will work here in the UK. I'll make some enquiries at the Southampton store.
