All of a sudden when using Safari, no matter what site I go to it asks to confirm "Static.ak.facebook.com" certificate. What is this and why does it pop up on every site I go too? Is it a virus? How do I get rid of it - no I have not book marked facebook either!

I had this issue (my version OSX 10.8.2) occur starting today and fixed it by doing the following:
1. Close all browser windows, other apps and then open a clean single browser window
2. Go to Safari>Preferences>Privacy
3. Click 'Remove All Website Data...' button, confirm
Restart
I just passed this by my white hatted, 'network security handy' friend. He dug into it and it seems that this is a simple issue of akamai.net (a well established content delivery company) using a certificate that has Facebook's name in it, instead of theirs. Nothing to worry about, as far as he can tell.
More specifically, he says "it is probably an akamai ad hoping you're an iPad user with Safari instead of the Facebook app.
It probably is an add for you to download the FaceBook app IF you are using Safari with an iPad....It's a setup error. It's a BAD setup error that makes Akamai look like dummies."
It looks like the issue may already have been resolved, server-side.
I am getting this too, very very obnoxious since it requires you to hit a dialog button.
I think i have solved it by going to my Keychain access then i went to Login (on the left side). I selected the static.ak.facebook.com or whatever it was...and deleted it and so far i havent got that annoying pop up message.
Thank you Benwah - seems to have worked - I think that help12help's suggestion would of also worked but tried your's first. Nevertheless thank you all for the input and suggestions. I'm not so mostly_annoyed anymore!
