There is a knowledgebase article about installing both versions on the same system.
(Don't have the link right here..)

Oct 24, 2012 3:38 AM in response to Jakob Peterhänselby marianromania,Instal today FINAL CUT PRO X UPDATE in my "imac" and lost "final cut 7" his name is "final cut pro" and "FINAL CUT PRO X" his name is "FINAL CUT PRO X" in aplication list !!!! after "TODAY" update FINAL CUT PRO X change name to FINAL CUT PRO and delete old "FINAL CUT PRO"
Not the first update for FINAL CUT X , but now ...uninstal FINAL CUT PRO 7....!!!
Final Cut X is not good and I still work on 7, FINAL CUT X(PRO) does not compare to Final Cut 7!!!

That is not the name of the application as it installs from the App Store. The name of the installed application is Final Cut Pro. Your FCP7 should have been store in a Final Cut Studio folder. Your operttaional procedure, to rename the application, caused the problem.
