Just finished wiping out my iMac for my son and in the process of installing updates, but it's stuck on "configuring installation". I also verified the disc and permission and everything had no problems. Did I miss anything?

Are you saying you erased the disk and reinstalled from a DVD?
At which point did you have a problem?
What Mac is it and which OS are you installing?
I erased the disc and reinstalled from the DVD the Mac came with. Everything was fine until I tried to install the updates and it stopped from there. It's the osx 10.4.
Safari and finder won't open unless I click on system preference in the dock which then shows the apple logo, etc on top.
Boot from the DVD and repair the hard disk and permissions.
Then download the following combo updater and install it:
Thank you Neville Hillyer. Was able to install all the updates after repairing the hard disk and permissions and also after erasing everything and reinstalling it again. I installed the updates one by one instead of in a group and it worked.
Just erase/install my Mac and it won't accept updates
