The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Probably not, because the charger gives the device what the device askes for, up the the limit of the charger. The iPad 3 will ask for 10, not 12.

Is it possible through a software update to have the iPad 3 "ask" for the 12Watt?
No.
If it were possible, then the iPad would likely burn up.
It's not likely something that can be addressed with software.
Im wondering if any body has noticed the same as me, charging my iphone 4 and ipad 3 on my Macbook Pro (mid 2010) is much faster then using power adapters.
Apple has already gone on record saying the 12w will charge the 3rd gen iPad slightly faster. Same way the 10w charges the iPhone slightly faster than that little charger it comes with. This info is common knowledge.

Where?
Can you point me to evidence of this?
This is nothing more than someone else claiming what Apple has said. Where is the actual Apple statement?
It's a respected news source for Apple products and the somebody they're quoting is Phil Schiller. It's always been known that the 10w charged the iPhone faster than the normal 5w, by the way and the same applies to the 12w. You're like 3 years late on the news update.
See the Learn more section.
This new charger is compatible with the iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, and many other devices. Since it supplies more power it will charge all the iPad models faster than the old 10 watt charger.
Thank you Jim its good to have other people on this forum that also know and understand the products they own.
You're confusing capacity with actual charge rate.
I went to the "Learn More" and Apple says nothing about charging "all the iPad models faster than the old 10 watt charger."
Where does APPLE support your allegation?
