will a hp 1020 laserjet work with a mac?

Actually it is not officially supported on Mac OS X and no drivers provided for your product via hp.com or Apple Software Update:

However you may try the following workaround, from my experience it should work:

1. Download and install the HP Printer Drivers 2.12 package:
   http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
2. Ensure the printer connected to your Mac, turned on and ready.
3. Once completing the installation go to Print & Fax / Print & Scan.
4. Click the plus button and select the listed P1020.
5. Click the Use / Print Using drop-down and then click Select Printer Software.
6. Select the HP LaserJet 1022 model and complete the steps to add the printer.

Now try printing using the created printer queue.
