On the screen recording feature on Quicktime, I cannot choose a part of the screen to record. On my laptime, I can drag and choose what part of the screen I want to record (as opposed to the whole screen).

10.7 and 10.8 have a a newer version of QuickTime X (not found in Snow Leopard) that allows "window" screen capture.
Upgrade your Snow Leopard machine to get this feature.

Sounds like each platform is running a different version of the Mac OS X operating system. For instance, OS X v10.8 comes with QT X v10.2 which can record partial screens while Mac OS X v10.6 comes with QT X v10.0 which which only records the entire screen.
