Lost sound on my iPad 2

Yesterday I was watching a netflix video and the sound suddenly went out. I checked all settings and they are as they should be. I opened up YouTube and when I opened the tv icon below the airport icon I noticed headphones has a checkmark, like it's been selected. I can't uncheck it, and I don't have headphones to check if that's work. I went in settings and selected closed caption to finish the movie, then deselected it and the sound was back. It lost the sound again, however, then came back and now it seems like I lost it for good. All my sound is gone, no email sounds, no clicking as I type, etc...

Any ideas what's wrong? Thanks.

You do not have sound in the music app? Did you try that? If you do have sound in there, you have system sounds muted.

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.

System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.

Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.

If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.

If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.

If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.

This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

If you have the screen locked - are you using the side switch to control that? If you are using the side switch for the screen, did you double tap the home button and swipe all the way to the right in the task bar at the bottom to see if the speaker icon shows all the way to the left? If is showing and it has a line through it, system sounds are muted. Tap the speaker icon to unmute the system sounds.

if you are certain that system sounds are not muted try this.

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

If that doesn't work, try this.

Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again.

I have never seen that headphones icon because I rarely use headphones or earbuds. If you have any earbuds at all - from an iPod or and iPhone, you could try plugging them in and out a couple of times and see if that works.

I was hoping resetting the settings would uncheck the headphone thing for you, but apparently the iPad doesn't want to cooperate.
