Why can't i install final cut studio in mountain lion?

Only Studio 3 will install on Mountain Lion...as the installer is INTEL based. The installers for Studio 1 and Studio 2 are power PC based, and require Rosetta be installed. Rosetta cannot be installed on Mountain Lion
So whats the best solution? do i have to downgrade to Lion? if so, how do i do that?
To install Lion, you need to back up all of your files, erase the hard drive and install the Lion OS. Then you need to do a Custom Install of Rosetta from the Snow Lion DVD. THEN you can install Final Cut Pro 7
wait, I thought you could install fcp7 in mountain lion. I thought it was fcp6 that was the problem. The OP says he's got fcp7.
AH....
Then why is he asking how to downgrade to Lion?
FCP 7 installs fine on Mountain Lion.
Cause you told him that only studio3 would install in ML and he probably didn't realize studio3 was fcp7.
Hope everyone's having a great turkey day.
This is a better work round than rosetta
$ sudo installer -package /Volumes/Final\ Cut\ Studio/Installer/FinalCutStudio.mpkg -target /
Installed Studio2 and then upgraded to 3. Might have been able just to install 3 directly but the above command in terminal avoided all the PowerPC errors.
why is this better than rosetta? I've done the rosetta thing for a few people and it's pretty simple. If you don't have a snowleopard install disk... yes, but if you do?
Well I am not familiar with Rosetta and yes as you say I haven't got a Snow Leopard disk handy. If you are happy with terminal then I suggest a cut and paste of a single command is easier? It took about 10mins to install and then it was just case of following the normal setup routine.
Do you know if you can install FCP7 Studio3 straight from from the upgrade disk? I probably should have tried this. Moot point now as everything is working fine.
>>Do you know if you can install FCP7 Studio3 straight from from the upgrade disk?
Yes. The upgrade DVD set is still a full installation.
When you start the installation, you will be asked for the serial number that FCS3 came with.
It will be recognised as an upgrade and will prompt you for the serial number of a prior full retail version at the next step.
There's nothing to familiarise with Rosetta btw. It runs in the background as and when needed. You will never see it in action unless Activity Monitor is running.
it's just a couple of minutes if you have a snowleopard disk.
As far as I know, there's never difference between a full install and an upgrade set of fcp disks. If you enter an upgrade serial number, it asks for the original serial number. Since I've been working with fcp since version 1, it can get a little confusing as to which serial numbers I need to enter. But I eventually figure it out. Although now, with fcp7 being EOL, the issue will not exist anymore.
Nick, you posted while I was still typing. Or is it cause you're in an earlier timezone?
I'm 6 hours in the future from where you are Mike.
Not quite as impressive as Andy though who is 12 hours ahead.

ANSWER:
I have come to the conclusion that the Installer app is NOT written in PowerPC, but otherwise has a bug that triggers the "PowerPC apps..." dialog box in Lion and Mt. Lion.
While you and others have attempted to install Rosetta from a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD into Lion or Mt. Lion, I am convinced that it only works to side-step this bug and allow the installer to complete the installation.
Think about it: if you can install Rosetta into Lion or Mt. Lion and get a PowerPC installer app to work, why doesn't that installation of Rosetta work for any of the hundreds of other PowerPC apps (and indeed they fail when launced to run in Lion or Mt. Lion with Rosetta installed)?
The conclusion is simple: the FCS2 installer app is NOT PowerPC and installing Rosetta into Lion or Mt. Lion will fail to gain any use of Rosetta on either platform.
So, you might respond, but if the simple installation of Rosetta into Lion or Mt. Lion fixes the bug and allows the installer app to function, why not?
The answer is more complicated: I am now reading posts on this and other forums of DANGER later on down that road. People who earlier installed Rosetta into their Lion computers are now reporting all sorts of otherwise unexplainable crashes, freezes, etc.!
There are two DANGER-FREE ways to install this program:
1`. Use Terminal as suggested above but described in more detail by Jeremy Johnstone on his blog (and be sure to read Aric's June 4, 2012 comment): http://www.jeremyjohnstone.com/blog/2012-03-11-installing-final-cut-pro-studio-2 -0-on-mac-os-x-10-7-lion.html; or
2. Use Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL ROSETTA INTO LION OR MOUNTAIN LION!
there are many things that can cause these sort of problems and they happen on computers that don't have rosetta installed. Can't say I'm an expert on this, just have learned to be skeptical. I would assume the only way to prove that the problems are caused by rosetta is if there's a way to uninstall it (about which I have no idea) and see if the problems disappear.
Happy to be proved wrong, but would like better documentation.
