FCPX 10.0.6 crashing repeatedly.

FCPX 10.0.6 has crashed constantly today whilst it was trying to re render clips in my current project.

If I reload an old backup (1 month old) of 10.0.5 will this work with my events and projects? Even though they have been updated to work with 10.0.6.

I have read that there are old versions of the events backed up by the OS for this exact problem.

Failing that is there any way to get 10.0.6 working well?

Using OS 10.8.2 on a 15 MacBook Pro 3ghz dual core duo with 8gb RAM.

Thanks

I had a crash problem also. I totally uninstalled FCPX using apples uninstall directions and re-downloaded from the app store. After reinstallling, it has worked great.

Yes you will have to re-render the project.

Another thing that has come to mind is that there may be a corrupt file that FCP is struggling with. The aaplication from Digital Rebellion has a search for corrupt file and fix corrupt file feature. Their app is available as a fully finctioning 14 day trial.

let us know how you go.

Thanks Tony, I am aware that your method meant that re render would be needed, I was referring to Chuck's suggestion of uninstall and reinstall.

I have again repaired permissions and the disk before uninstalling FCPX as per Apple's 'how to' instructions. I then redownloaded and installed FCPX and reset all my preferences.

It seems to work. Fingers crossed.

In addition I downloaded Digital Rebellions application. I ran it with no problems flagged. However it did state whilst it ran that it would repair Compressor, Avid and Premier files it made no mention of FCPX?

I will let you know if anything goes wrong.

Thanks Tony and Chuck

Do you mean render, or was 10.0.6 updating your Events and Projects? If you have a lot of Events, the new update can crash during the updating process.

Otherwise, it sounds as though you have some corrupt media somewhere in your project.

Use Finder to move the Events for that Project to a new (temporary) folder so that FCP X doesn't see them when it launches.

Assuming the app will now launch OK (with all the media red and offline) quit FCP X again and restore one of your events to it's original place.

Re-launch FCP X again. Does it work OK, or does it crash?

Use the same process to restore the rest of the Events one by one, until you track down the rogue one.

You then need to use a similar process to locate the actual file or files that are causing the problem. This time, use Finder to hide the actual video files, then restore a few at a time until the crashing starts again.

It's a simple process of elimination.

It is rendering.

It has updated the projects and events.

I only have about 20 projects and the same events. Non of which are longer than 10 mins.

After between 5% and 15% of the render it stops.

I then have to Force Quit FCPX because of the spinning ball of death.

After quitting FCPX after a few mins the OS becomes unresponsive and I have to Force Quit the computer.

If I reload a saved version of FCPX 10.0.5 will it work with my projects and events? I know that there are saved 'Old versions' of projects.

Thanks

To revert, you need to save the new event files in folders within the event, then drag the old versions out of their folders, to where the new versions were.

Hide the 10.0.6 version of FCP X in a new folder, and drag the backup of 10.0.5 to the applications folder - you will then be back where you started.

BUT . . . there is probably some 'dodgey' footage in there somewhere, and it would be best to find it rather than 'paper over the cracks'.
