Apr 17, 2013 4:15 AM in response to jeff Leyshon 66by jeff Leyshon 66,I have installed 10.0.8 and are having the exact same issues. In the following order :-
- Eventually stalls (spinney coloured ball) while rendering or exporting
- I then have to force quit FCPX
- Eventually something goes awry with the rest of OSX; e.g. Finder unreponsive or Safari crashes
- I try and Shut Down but it stops at the grey screen and stays forever
- So I then have to Force Shut Down
- I start up in recovery mode (cmd R) and verify disk which always needs to be repaired
- So I Repair Disk then permissions and start up again.
If I use my slower Graphics Card (mid 2009 MBP has the choice of 2) then everything works well, so far in my experience. Not a great solution.
Please feel free to share your experience or provide proven solutions
Thanks

Apr 17, 2013 4:37 AM in response to jeff Leyshon 66by jeff Leyshon 66,I should add that both Graphics cards in my MacBook Pro 3.02Ghz, 8GB RAM, are (apparently) compatible with FCPX 10.0.8 according to Apple.
- GeForce 9400M (256)
- GeForce 9600M GT (512)

Apr 17, 2013 4:47 AM in response to jeff Leyshon 66by Russ H,I have a similar MBP with those cards and it's working.
Have you trashed preferences?
If that doesn't cure things and this happens with multiple projects (not just one) I would uninstall and reinstall.
If it's project specific, paste the project sequence into a fresh project and delete render files.

However, I have already tried your suggestions numerous times on 10.0.6, 10.0.7 & 10.0.8.
As you can see this is a long on going thread and pretty much every conceivable, sensible, logical solution has been tried.
It seems to affect random Macs, OS's, both old and new.
All my files are stored on an external 2TB HDD using FireWire 800. It has been suggested by some that this could be the cause. However everything was working perfectly well all the way up to 10.0.5
Thanks again

Apr 17, 2013 7:37 AM in response to jeff Leyshon 66by JimTheDreamer,Hi Jeff,
Can't remember if I reported my findings but remember having very similar MBP to you with same cards.
I was editing off a FireWire 800 drive too. After trying lots of different things I started using the drive via USB instead and the problem hasn't reoccured, regardless of which graphics card I use.
Probably not what you want to hear... I know it's not a solution, but I guess it's an option!
Thanks,
James

Apr 17, 2013 7:38 AM in response to jeff Leyshon 66by Russ H,You're right about it being a long thread, and have to admit that I only skimmed it to get a little background to your recent posts.
This may be mentioned elsewhere and I overlooked it, but have you ever had your MBP checked out by the Apple tech people?

Not an elegant solution but I will definately try this and let you know if it works

Don't blame you for not reading the whole thread. Though it does resemble a soap opera in places.
I haven't had an Apple tech look at my machine, no. It's well out of warranty and has no problems elsewhere. Again, this problem only started with FCPX 10.0.6

Apr 29, 2013 2:34 PM in response to JpLordiby BarbaraU ,All,
In November 2012 after updating FCPX to 10.0.6, I began having the problems that many describe—repeated crashing sometimes freezing whole system, having to do hard shut downs. My system is: 2009 MBP 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB SSD, 6 TB GTech RAID connected with FW800. I edit on the G Tech RAID.
After trying many of the suggestions on this thread and finding them either not workable or barely so, I purchased and began using a Sonnet SATA Pro Express Card/34 and have not looked back. I can work as fast as my older system allows. I have an occuassional crash but nothing like before.
The only gliche was when I upgraded to 10.0.7. The earlier pre-SATA Express Card/34 problems began reappearing so I uninstalled 10.0.7 and re-installed 10.0.6 from a back-up. That resolved the crashing that began after the 10.0.7 upgrade.
I'm no expert and a first time FCPX user, but using 10.0.6 on my 2009 17" MBP with the SATA Express Card/34, I was able to put together and post this short advocacy video on Vimeo - https://vimeo.com/64402227 that would have been impossible before switching to the SATA connection. It's puzzeling to me others don't seem to be trying this likely solution. It sure worked for me.

Apr 29, 2013 3:20 PM in response to JpLordiby jeff Leyshon 66,I'm still using the same drives but connecting with USB 2.
Slower but it hasn't crashed yet.
I did edit a very short fashion piece last week (45 secs) and worked direct from the laptop HDD with no problems.
All my drives are eSATA however because Apple decided to replace the express card port with an SD card slot I can't connect this way any more. Not until I purchase a MBP with Thunderbolt.
As a side rant this sums up Apples departure from catering to Professionals. They are in danger of losing their core audience which is reflected in their share price. I have been a professional photographer in London for 18 yrs and have always used Macs and there is a similar story with all of my colleagues. However recently I hear stories of people being forced to switch to PCs because a Mac Pro isn't available, this is particularly true in film making.

Jul 17, 2014 1:47 PM in response to jeff Leyshon 66by goverjkg,I just read every post in this thread and I can't tell you how good (bad?) it feels to hear others having the same problem I am. My issue, however, is that I came into this A/V position four months ago and, at about month 2, all this happened.
In short (very short), The MacBook Pro crashes within 30 minutes every single time I use it. It's so frequent that I've gotten to the point where I think "I've been working too long. I better shut down." As with all of you, the main issue seems to be Final Cut Pro X (10.0.6) although I have been in Safari and Google Chrome -- with FCPX closed -- and it's crashed.
By the way, by "crash" I mean beach ball --> unresponsive while beach balling --> force shut down --> wait a few minutes --> repeat.
All of the clips and footage I'm using (short of backing audio tracks or stills) is housed on external Seagate Barracuda 3TB drives that I access through Thermaltake toasters (the BlacX Duet via USB 2.0 and the BlacX 5G via 3.0 respectively). I have also worked with footage (.mts files converted to .mp4 files using iSkySoft Video Converter) transferred from a Panasonic HDC-TM700 and still experienced the crashes.
I have taken it to a local MacAuthority in order to have a diagnostic run on it and all they could tell me was "you need a new logic board." Not equipped with the time or money to go that route -- plus, I don't believe that's problem -- I thanked them and have been working around the crashes since.
Here's the deal. I'm not a Mac guy but I LOVE Final Cut Pro. I don't want to be forced to go Sony Vegas or Avid. Has anyone found a solution other than "switch graphics cards?" And please remember, I inherited this machine and the guy before me purchased FCPX through the Apple Store -- i.e. not a hard copy -- and I do not have his login information to do the uninstall/re-install dance (or update, for that matter).
Thank you for your time and thank you so much for giving me some actual adequate information!

Jul 17, 2014 2:40 PM in response to goverjkgby Russ H,I doubt if your problem is FCP X and I don't know why you would disbelieve what the tech told you. Nonetheless, it wouldn't hurt to trash preferences with this app. And you should repair permissions with Disk Utility.
As far as the MBP's freezes, hangs, crashes are concerned, try starting in safe mode to see whether it improves. You could also download and run Onyx which has both repair and diagnostic utilities.
I would post this in the MBP forum where you're likely to get some informed advice.
