How do you connect a guitar on Garageband through an Iphone 5

Forgive the seeming obviousness, but I am a first time Iphone user. Logically, there are only two points: the 1/8" headphone jack or the 8pin USB interface.

If the former (there appears to be some other developers like I-Rig hooking up here), must this be done via a proprietary cable, or will any 1/4"instrument cable with 1/8" adapter/ 1/8" cable with 1/4" adapter work?

If the later, the obvious issue is that the I5's 8pin interface is not going to work with the 30pin perpherals (and even with an adapter, side issues may crop up)

Has anybody successfully interfaced a guitar on Garageband's Amp section through an Iphone 5? If so, how? If not, how have you interfaced your guitar in Garageband through your earlier model Iphone? TIA.

You can't just use a normal 1/8" to 1/4" cable because iOS devices like your iPhone 5 use a 4 pole connector. If you want to connect your guitar I'd definitely look at iRig, there is also the iRig STOMP which is a bit nicer with active electronics, stereo 1/4" outs, headphone out and was made to work with other guitar pedals, amps and P.A.'s.
