Use the cable that came in the box with the phone... One end plugs into your phone, the other end plugs into a USB port on your computer.
Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer.
If you have the iPhone 3 as it shows in your profile, it is 4 generations old. It only supports iOS 4.2.1. and you will have trouble with apps, since most are designed to work with the new iOS. I'd give you a link to the manual, but it will take you to the one for iOS 6, so that won't help. Try this support document and see if it helps you http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296
