does the iphone 5 only produce 16:9 stills while taking video and then snapping camera?

hello fellow i5 users! Maybe a silly question but I cant seem to find info by google. Seems while taking pics HDR or not, the pics dont fill the screen, but if your videoing and take a snapshot the pic fills the screen but quality is not as good. Am I missing something here? Thank you for any input.

iPhone 5, iOS 6

The camera has 8 Mega pixels (3264x2448). This is a 4:3 ratio and does not match the shape of the iPhone screen.

In video mode only part of the camera sensor is used to create a 16:9 ratio that is then compressed to 1920x1080 (2 Mega pixels). This is the same ratio as the iPhone 5 screen. Still pictures taken while recording video are aleo 1920x1080, so do not have as mich detail as photos taken in normal camera mode.
