Q: I have purchased a Time Capsule 2TB recently, and I have not been able to complete the initial setup.

I have recently purchased a Time Capsule 2 TB. I have connected it to my BT Infinity Hub via ehternet cable. After connection, the orange continues to flash.

The capsule shows both an IP address and a LAN IP address. It also indicates that its network is Iain's Wi-Fi Network (setup by default).

the Capsule has a couple of messages as follows:

1. Double NAT - This Airport base station (Capsule) has a private IP address on ethernet WAN port, using NAT. It suggests changing setting from DHCP and NAT to bridge mode.

2. Setup over WAN - This Airport base station (capsule) is setup over ethernet WAN port, which decreases network security.

I have tried a soft reset, but nothing has changed and I do not know what changes I need to make to allow the capsule to complete its setup.

I would appreciate an expert opinion on what I need to do to fix the Time Capsule setup.

What version of AirPort Utility are you using to configure the Time Capsule?

If on a Mac, open AirPort Utility, click the AirPort Utility menu at the upper left corner of the Mac's screen and click About AirPort Utility to see the version number.

Do you want the Time Capsule to also provide a wireless network, or do you want to use the wireless from the BT device and turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule?

Hi Bob, my Airport Utility is version 6.1.

I purchased the Time Capsule , primarily for storing and sharing files wirelessly between my various devices, being a MacBook Pro, iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

I have just recently upgraded my router to BT Infinity fibre optic service, so I plan to continue to access the Internet via this router.

Please open AirPort Utility and click on the Time Capsule icon

Click Edit in the small box that appears

Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window and change the Network Mode to "Off"

Now click the Network tab at the top of the window

Make sure that the setting for Router Mode is Off (Bridge Mode)

Click Update to save the settings

You should have a green light in about 30 seconds.  All is well now.

Hi Bob, thank you for your speedy solution, which has worked, and I now have an external storage disk.

I am now running my first backup using Time Machine.

If I wanted to use the Time Capsule as a wireless network, what would I need to do to set it up?

I would not recommend that you do this if you intend to leave your other wireless network enabled as well.  Two routers, both producing wireless networks will likely create interference effects that may degrade the quality on both networks.

If you want to try this anyway, Open AirPort Utility, click on the Time Capsule and click Edit. Then click the Wireless tab and adjust your settings to look like the example below.

Enter the name that you want to use for the network and the wirelesss network password and click Update to save the settings.
