How come photostream is free on pc but on mac i have to pay for iPhoto's update ?

I dont understand why i can access the photo stream easily and for free under windows while i have to pay to update iphoto if i want the same on my mac ? Not to mention the aperture option which is too costy if one does only need the photo stream 🙂

Because you're running a version of iPhoto that is 2 versions old and was superseded back in January, 2009. Everyone has to purchase upgrades from one version to another every since iLife 04. Updates within a version, i.e. 8.1 to 8.1.2 are free.

If you want to go the long route you can purchase the iLIfe 11 disc from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: iLife 11 to get iPhoto 9 and then go thru the many updaters available from the Apple Downloads webpage to get to the current 9.4.1. This way you'll also get a copy of iDVD and iWeb which have been discontinued if you don't already have them.

PhotoStream is designed to work with iPhoto and Aperture. Those two applications do not exist for Windows, so Apple had to provide a bare-bones way for Windows users to access their photos.

Many Mac users got iPhoto free with their computer, or if not, it is available very cheaply from the AppStore and provides a much better way to manage photos than Windows users get.

AS Julian pionted out iPhoto is the gateway to iCloud Photo Stream for Macs while PCs use something else. That's the nature of the beast. What are you complaining about having to upgrade to iPhoto 9 and not doing the same for having to upgrade to either Lion or Mt. Lion to run iCloud. Both require purchases for machines running earlier systems.
