Message 'Pings' me Twice

i am going nuts or missing something, i get 2 message pings sometimes and look at my phone and only have one message... and i cant see any other notifications. Am i missing a notification or does my message 'Ping' me again if i havent looked and unlocked my phone from the first message Ping... Ping being my message sound?
