How to import AVCHD movies into iPhoto without wavy lines.

Seems to be quite the common plight but few resolved answers (that I could find) ...

Importing videos in to iPhoto from Sony Handycam "works", but upon viewing the quality is garbage with lines, shooting in 1080i mode at 30 fps.

I know I can import into iMovie but because it converts that to AIC it chews up way more space. I've also played around with ClipWare, but that only seems to reduce the distraction slightly.

Any other automated software out there to do this? Seems like a good market to make some serious coin for whoever comes up with software for it.

As far as I know, what this is about is that when playing back the video in iPhoto it doesn't deinterlace it (at least not propelry). That's why the ”waves” are seen.

What I fin strange is that if I use Quick Look in the Finder to view the video, or open it up in QuickTime Player the video plays back without the waves, and thus seems to be deinterlaced.

Why iPhoto don't seem to use the same way of playback as QuickTime Player and Quick Look is what I find strange. I thought all software were using QuickTime? Maybe it is, but for some reason it's different in iPhoto.

Ah, so we are just doing it wrong! ;->

Actually, I import my video into iPhoto for storage along with the associated pictures. I like to be able to find photos and video together in the same place in the future. I sometimes bring the video over into iMovie for editing but not often. However, I never know when I might want to take some old video and bring it into iMovie to edit.

So why would I change to a video format that doesn't suite my needs just to get it to display properly in iPhoto? Either iPhoto fully and properly supports AVCHD or it does not. If AVCHD is properly displayed in Quicktime why would it not display properly in iPhoto?

What happened to "Apple, it just works!"

This is a bug not a feature and it is something that has been left unaddressed for too long. At this point I realize it will probably never be addressed, at least in iPhoto, since all resources and focus is on Photos. I will wait for that and see how it works.

??

We are simply users just like you - we can not fix or change anything and do not give opinions on what is right or wrong or what should be - we help receptive people understand and use iPhoto the way it is

If you do not want that then this is the wrong place to be - Rants and attacks against the users you are trying to help you is counterproductive and is best left at home

If you wan help then the very experienced users here usually can help - if you want to RANT and complain then no one can help here - if you want changes then contact Apple (iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback)

Lighten up Francis! It was meant to be lighthearted observation of some frustrating facts. Didn't you see my smiling winking emoticon? 😉

It is cathartic to vent a little now and then by the way, you should try it sometime.

I originally posted to confirm for others that the bug was still there.

Your post was not helpful since you simply told me to stop doing what I need to do. I understand that is all the advice you could give since there is no workaround for the bug. I explained why changing to another video format would not meet my needs.

Your suggestion for contacting Apple directly and giving feedback is good but at this point we are probably having a tempest in a teacup over nothing since it will be a whole new ballgame in Photos.

So long and have a nice day.

Oh get a grip. I said nothing at all about you or what you were doing. Nothing at all. I just pointed out a simple fact. From what you say you don't actually know what your needs are. Lots of folks shoot AVCHD who have no interest in actually editing. That was for their benefit. That fact that you don't know if you want to edit or not is, while revelatory autobiography on your part, less than fascinating. The correct response might have been 'Thank you, but I'm indecisive'.

Either iPhoto fully and properly supports AVCHD or it does not.

You know, I'd agree with you 100% were it not for the fact that no one agrees exactly what AVCHD actually is. Every single camera maker has their own version. It's a mess.

It works, if you are using the provided tools the way they are meant to be used. iPhoto will support most video formats created by digital photo cameras, and iMovie the video formats of video cameras. iMovie has been designed to be the video library and your movie theater, not iiPhoto.

You came in an threadjacked a thread to post a RANT - maybe you intended you RANT to be light hearted - it does not appear that way to me - You used your Threakjack to attack volunteers and you suggest that anyone would "Lighten Up"? WOW!

It may be cathartic to vent - go outside and do it - this is certainly NOT a place to vent - it is a place for users who actually want help to get help

As to bug - not really - ACVHD from my Sony works fine - as has been pointed out AVCHD is a mess and have no consistence across brands - if you want to RANT then go RANT to the seller of your ACVHD device since they have done something that tis incompatible with Apple - Apple works with AVCHD form many (Most?) vendors

Have a nice day - hope your neighbors love your Cathartic RANT

How is importing video into iPhoto and wanting to view it in iPhoto not "using the provided tools the way they are meant to be used"? If Apple didn't want me to import videos into iPhoto it would be simple enough to remove video support altogether. Instead they did an incomplete job of supporting AVHCD (Which as Terence pointed out is far from an established standard so I guess I should be glad it works at all!)

I have a Sony NEX-5R and I am just curious why the video displays properly in Quicktime and not in iPhoto. Without knowing more about how iPhoto renders video I probably will never know.

I realize iPhoto is limited in its capabilities as I have been using it since it was first released. I remember when AVHCD was not supported and rejoiced when Apple finally supported it (at least partially). I also have used iMovie since its release, and relearning with each release that changes everything, which is fun.

Since, I have obviously offended the forum and "hijacked" a year old inactive thread, I apologize. Obviously my attempts at humor don't translate to text in a forum! "Lighten up Francis" is from Stripes by the way.

I am duly chastised and will attempt no more humor, ranting, venting, or statement of my feelings regarding frustrating (sorry!) bugs in Apple Software.🙂
